And then there were seven! Jonathan Barragan is the latest World MX1 championship challenger to bite the dust.
No sooner was the series open again to any one of eight riders, the Silver Action KTM teamster has put himself out of contention with a practice crash on Tuesday.
Barragan sustained two cracked ribs and during the course of the operation that followed, doctors also had to remove his spleen. He is now out of intensive care and now faces a period of recovery time.
Currently third in the world championship standings, the talented Barragan was a definite title contender for the 2009 season.
"At least three weeks," is the initial information on the Spaniard's expected absence from the GP trail.
He will miss this weekend's - June 7 - French GP at Ernee and must be considered doubtful for the German GP a fortnight later.
