One Ell' of a start for Michael
By TMX Archives on 26th Feb 09

AFTER the winter lay off over 200 riders turned out to contest the first round of the club championships at the East Cumbria Motocross clubs track at Low Gelt Farm, Brampton. With the rain and snow over the last few months the track conditions were as good as the club could make it, testing in some areas and good in others, but that didn't deter the riders as some excellent battles ensued and the spectators who turned out saw some great racing. In the Junior 65cc class, John Joe Wright took the lead in race one, but was soon overtaken by Callum Bircher and Joel Hart. Bircher took race one with Hart and Wright settling for second and third. Race two and the tables were turned as Wright took the win with Bircher in second and Rusty Peebles taking third. Race three and Bircher took his second race win, and the overall.
In the Small-wheel 85's, it was Phillip Cockburn who took race one with Casey Connelly in second. Race two and local boy Brad Todd took the win after some battles with Connelly and Sam Braithwaite. Race three and Todd showed his knowledge of the Brampton track as he took another race win and the overall. Connelly pipped Braithwaite by one point to take second overall Braithwaite taking third.
The Big-wheel 85cc saw some great battles between Matthew Fleming and Adam Sterry, leaving everyone else to sort out the placings. Sterry took race one with Fleming right on his heels. Race two and Fleming hit the front with Sterry chasing him. Race three and Fleming took the win and the overall, with Sterry second.Tom Moore claimed the third overall by just two points from Adam Darbeshire who settled for fourth.
