Phil's Wil' to win
By TMX Archives on 11th Dec 08

WITH Championship silverware and bragging rights up for grabs, the sun shone on the bold and the brave at Polesworth for the final round of this year's Wilden Winter Championship.Although the temperature barely climbed above zero all day long, with clear blue skies overhead and yet another bumper entry of riders producing a few five star performances, it turned out to be just the perfect day. Bringing the curtain down on yet another tremendous winter series. The quad riders who opened up proceedings made a good job of roughing up the frozen top surface for the rest of the racers. Oli Sansom again proved to be top dog with a set of three powerhouse performances on his super quick Suzuki as Tyler Soar, Scott Lindlay and Jordan Corrigan all came home with one second place finish apiece.
The best group of the day, without doubt, was the combined Two-stroke class as Joe Jones on a 125cc mount took on Phil Mercer, Stuart Halston and Darren Webster, who were all on 250cc machinery, and all four guys duly turned on the style.
At the end of the day, Mercer took three cracking race wins aboard his Kawasaki but Jones gave just as good as he got in a see-saw encounter first time out. Jones eventually ended the day in second overall in the day's combined results and scooped up the overall 125cc Championship trophy for good measure as well.
Jarad Goodwin took the opening four-stroke race win and was also looking good second time around until the gremlins struck. Paul Burn took full advantage as he collected maximum points in that race and third time out he also claimed a hard-fought but well-earned overall victory. Danger UK's Jamie Houghton with three more solid battling performances picked up the runners-up award.
Ryan Houghton and Matthew Fleming are arguably the best two Big-wheel 85cc riders in the country right now and they topped the bill in the 85cc division. Houghton won through with a 1-1-2 card after blitzing the first race as both guys looking right on the money. The middle encounter was a tight affair with a swing of fortunes in Ryan's favour following a yellow flag infringement by Fleming.
