In a sport where opportunities at the top level are hard-earned and rarely handed out, Tom Murphy’s call-up to the Apico Honda team is a genuine feelgood story - proof that persistence in the privateer ranks can still open big doors.

The Apico-backed MX1 rider has been drafted in to replace injured Josh Gilbert, who has been sidelined following a heavy crash at Preston Docks. Initially thought to be manageable, Gilbert’s shoulder injury has since required surgery, ruling him out for the immediate future.

While the team remains hopeful of a return later in the season, the focus has now shifted to recovery - and giving another rider a shot.

Murphy, a long-time member of the Apico setup, gets that opportunity.

Having steadily built his reputation in the MX1 class, the Honda-mounted privateer will now step under the official team awning for the next round of the Motul British Motocross Championship at Lyng, lining up alongside established names in a significant step forward in his career.

Team boss Dylan Brown was quick to praise both riders, acknowledging the difficult circumstances while highlighting the opportunity ahead.

“After learning more about Josh’s prognosis, we had to accept it wasn’t feasible to continue riding with his injury,” he explained. “The whole team wishes him a speedy recovery, and we hope to see him back with us towards the end of the season, once he’s had a chance to heal and rebuild his strength in his shoulder.

“Tom Murphy has been part of the Apico family for several years, and with him riding a Honda CRF450 2026 already this season, Anna and I decided to offer him the chance to fill in whilst Josh is recovering, and he was happy to accept the offer. We hope this opportunity will give him further motivation with his motocross career and results in the championship.

For Murphy, the call-up represents a major milestone.

“I’d like to thank Dylan and Anna for the opportunity to be part of the Apico Honda team,” he said. “I’m looking forward to being under the awning and pushing myself to do the best I can for the team and sponsors. I wish Josh well with his recovery and hope to see him back racing with the team soon.”

With Lyng next up, all eyes will be on Murphy as he makes the transition from privateer to supported rider - grabbing a chance many chase, but few receive.
