Raga takes a Bou in Italy
By TMX Archives on 25th Jun 09
THE sixth of the eight round 2009 SPEA FIM World Trials Championship took place in Italy on Sunday with a scorching hot day on the mountainside at Barzio, staged by MC Monza. And the tricky event saw NONE of the series leaders, Toni Bou, Alexz Wigg or Jonathan Richardson triumph although all three still hold commanding leads in the Championship, Junior and Youth classes respectively.Report: g2fPictures: ERIC KITCHEN
A rampant Adam Raga put his Gas Gas two-stroke on top for the first time since the opening round in Ireland while Bou dropped to third, behind his Repsol Montesa team-mate Takahisa Fujinami, for the first time this year.
And Dougie Lampkin put his Erzberg misfortunes behind him to nail another fine fourth place – just two marks away from dumping Bou off the podium.
The opening three sections took place in a wide river before moving on to four sections featuring steep climbs with rocks. The action then moved way up the mountainside to alongside the ski-lift before dropping right back down for three closing subs on the banks of the river.
A large Junior and Youth entry caused mega problems as the early-starting riders arrived at the first section on their second lap before the Championship boys had started their first. This then compounded itself as the trial progressed with the result that most Championship riders got saddled with time faults on their first lap plus lost extra marks while rushing trying to avoid the time faults.
Raga was supreme on section 13 on the opening lap, taking the only clean amongst a host of fives but James Dabill was desperately unlucky as he rode the hazard feet-up only to have the whistle blown for running out of time just before he crossed the Ends cards.
Cruel luck. Dibs finished seventh with Michael Brown having a hard day at the office in tenth.
In the Juniors, Alexz Wigg was robbed of the win by a five on the climb at the sixth section but second place, to home-boy Matteo Grattarola, was more than enough to keep ‘Wiggy' well clear of the pack in the Championship.
Jack Challoner only lost out on a podium on the tie break with the experienced Alfredo Gomez, while George Morton nailed a fine top ten finish. Ross Danby and James Fry both enjoyed points-scoring rides.
Meanwhile, in the Juniors Jonathan Richardson was again right on the pace and although the event was won by the inconsistent young Spaniard Carles Traviesa (who won on both days in Great Britain) with Belgian Maxime Warenghien second, a close third place finish still sees Rich with a 40-point series advantage.
Ben Morphett and Jonny Walker were again in the top ten, just as they were in the previous day's Euro round.
Fujinami: "My riding was not perfect today, so to finish second and you have not ridden at your best you have to be happy. The trial has been OK, the sections were a little difficult to understand on the first lap, perhaps why many of the riders made so many
mistakes. My first lap was OK until the final sections, but the problem was we had no time and rode these in a rush without even looking at them. I was happy with the second lap, especially as I still have some pain in my ribs from the crash in England.”
Bou: "To be on the podium after what happened on the first lap, is more than I could have hoped for after I saw the scores at the end of the first lap and realised I was down in fifth place. The problem was with my mentality, I made a stupid five in section eight and after that I completely lost my head and my
concentration. I was angry with myself and I took this into the next sections.
This, plus we had no time meant the first lap was a complete disaster. In the end
I made quite a nice recovery and I'm pleased to finish third.”
