Readers Bike: Andy Malloch’s Armstrong
By Team TMX on 16th Jul 14
This immaculate 1983 500 MX Armstrong is the property of classic and twin-shock rider Andy Malloch.
Andy is a fanatic of these British-made machines and has a similar model to this in his bike collection at his Perthshire home.
This particular classic was bought as a basket-case in 2007 by Leicester bike builder Peter Hall who did all the restoration work on it before it was purchased by Andy.
The machine required a few new parts although most of the pieces to build the project were all within the assembled boxes.
The motor had a complete strip and rebuild but never needed anything more than new crankcase seals and a few other minor components.
Andy has had plenty of success riding this machine and lists the bike's superb low-down torque as one of its greatest assets.
"It's great out of corners” said Andy. "You just make the turn and then wind on the power, there's virtually no wheel spin and no fear of the bike swapping ends.”
