Readers Rides - 1992 Suzuki RM125
By Team TMX on 20th Jan 19
Sussex-based Boretech Engineering is well known for its wide and varied range of classic rebuilds, from full nut and bolt restorations through to race-prepping long-stored machines aiming for a return to the track.
Here we have a recent full rebuild example of a 1992 RM125. Boretechs Sam Heitman tells the story...
The customer had dreamed of having an RM125 back in the 90s, but, like many of us, time, money and life got in the way. A couple of years ago he found a well-used and abused sample and set about rebuilding it himself, before realising it was a bigger job than he expected. He gave us a call and turned up with a van full of boxes of bits. It had been totally stripped and the frame resprayed, but that was it.
Our first job was to go through all the boxes and make sure we had everything to begin a rebuild. The engine had been stripped so we shot-blasted the cases and replaced all the bearings and seals. We fitted a new genuine con-rod kit and piston kit and the customer had managed to source a new-old-stock FMF tuned cylinder from the States, hence the gold paint. New power valves were fitted and the engine was reassembled.
The suspension linkage and swingarm were stripped and new, genuine Suzuki bearings and seals fitted throughout. Then the forks and shock were fully serviced and re-sprung to suit the riders size and riding style.
The wheels were totally stripped and we shot blasted the hubs, then new bearings and gold rims fitted. The bike was finished off with a mix of UFO and Genuine Suzuki plastics, new-old-stock Tecnosel Cobra seat cover and original style decals, a full Pro-Circuit factory exhaust system, Pro Taper Contour bars, Renthal grips and Pro Taper levers hooked up with genuine Suzuki throttle and cables.
We fitted Works Connection frame guards to protect the frame and give the bike a works look, and although we didnt set out to make it look like a USA Suzuki Team bike, it ended up that way with the available plastics. The customer was well pleased with the finished bike and took it away with a big smile on his face. He called a few weeks later and I asked him if he had ridden it yet. He said it was in pride of place in his lounge!
