Report: East Anglia Pro Green Winter Series
By Team TMX on 3rd Feb 16
East Anglia SSC staged the third and final round of its Pro Green Winter Series at Mepal, where riders and spectators were greeted with drizzle. This made the already technical track even tougher with some of the ruts deeper than the little Auto racers. The first class out was the Senior group on the flat track, but it didnt stay that way for long and as it rutted up throughout the day it caught out many riders.
Ben Clark took the overall with Todd Ritchie only two-points behind, followed by George Turner.
Next up were the Autos, where Kalvin Kelly pulled over in race two with what seemed to be bike problems, but with a quick fix he re-joined the race to finish fourth which left him and Archie Girdham on joint points for the overall. With Kalvin having the win in the last race he was lucky enough to keep pole position.
Last week's winner Shaun Mahoney took third place.
Alfie Jones and Wal Beaney battled in all three Junior 65cc races and ended with both on 131 points.
The overall went to Alfie, who took the win in race three.
Kyle Ingram tried hard but found the sand tough and finished with a respectable third in class.
A line up of 21 Veterans took to the sand and there were three different race winners.
With a 3-1-2 card, James Holt top spot with Arvydas Bartasuis and Paul Austin tied on 121 points. Arvydas took second on a tie break with Austin third.
Bobby Bruce took another three maximums on the Small-wheel group with Ben Clark hot on his heels in second.
Aaron Brown had a mixed bag of results but it was enough to give him third overall.
Following that, the first group of the big boys came out to play and the AMX class produced some good battles between Robert Yates and Chubbie Hammond with Yates taking three race wins.
After taking a few dirt samples Hammond managed to finish in third with Shaun Springer's consistency giving him second overall.
Next out was the Big-wheel class and there was some great riding with plenty of side-by-side action and bar-banging between Sam Price and Josh Peters.
Just two points separated them with Price first, Peters second, with Todd Leadbitter in third.
Finally, the Open riders took to the track with MX1 rider James Hutchinson joining in the fun and making sure Liam Knight was pushed to the max. Hutchinson decided not to ride for points, despite taking two of the three wins.
Battle
The top six riders produced some fantastic battles and, with James out of the picture, Knight took top spot ahead of Reece Desoer and Luke Gidney third.
The Winter Series Perpetual Trophies went to AMX rider Rob Yates, who took the highest point across the classes to collect the Snowball Trophy.
Open Rider Luke Gidney was awarded the Tom Smith Memorial Trophy as the highest placed Open rider. The Spirit of Winter Trophy went to junior rider Max McGilley for sheer guts and determination in riding his first ever series.
Well done to all the riders who contested this series – the track was brutal and unforgiving at times.
Thanks to Stuart Nunn and Martin Wright for the track prep and to all the committee and helpers who made this series what it was.
