Report: Massive turnout for Cumbria MXC's latest round
By Team TMX on 27th Jun 19
Sun, Sea, Sand and Motocross whats not to like... Mix in some of the fastest racers in the north and this weekend was good to go for the Cumbria MX clubs latest championship rounds.
A big turnout of Autos were first up on the track on Saturday, Travis Tailford went 1-1-2 to take the overall from moto three winner Isaac Ramsey. Completing the podium was local Connor Thompson, continuing his impressive run of form.
The 65 class was stacked with any number of potential winners. However, with local knowledge mixed in with some serious speed it was Jamie Keith taking maximum points and the holeshot prize.
Scotlands Rhys Whyment was never far behind going 2-2-2 and Joel Winstanley Dawson ran 3-3-3 for third overall.
Liam Johnston continued his rapid early season for maximum points in the Small-Wheel 85 class on Saturday. The battle for second went down to a final moto shootout between Daniel Pierce and Lewis Proud with Pierce coming out on top although level on 125 points each.
The Big-Wheel class saw Arai Elcock the one to end Robbie Parks recent win streak and he took the overall by two points. The TM machine of Grace Richards completed the podium in third.
The Youth/Rookies class continued to be the one to watch in Cumbria in 2019 and with a scorecard of 3-1-2 it was youngster Oliver Barr taking the overall just two points ahead of friend, rival and moto three winner Adam Slavin.
The C classes ran together with a packed gate and some mega racing. Bradley Owens was a maximum man in the Under 30 group closely followed by Daz Birkbeck and Adam Curwen. Both Scott Atkinson and Todd Ingram were unlucky to miss out on the podium.
The Over 30s was taken by another maximum man in the form of veteran Paul Coward. Behind him six riders were separated by seven points Stephen Humphries was the man who took second ahead of John Carruthers.
The B class has been another one this year with some brilliant racing. Mixed in with the A class these lads and lasses sure know how to mix it. Local Lad Liam Sommerville took the top step of the podium with Austin Mowbray unlucky to have a DNF in the final moto after being level on points with Liam. Ben Southward was second overall and Andrew Slavin completing the top three.
The A class saw some great battles between British Championship contenders Tony Craig and new dad Jamie Law. Law had a DNF in the final moto and Craig took maximum points. Jacob Joyce made another trip up to Cumbria to take second overall with Jake Gowan third in his first race back following knee surgery.
Sunday came with a fresh track. In the Autos Travis Tailford was the one to beat again and took home a 1-1-1 scorecard ahead of William David Houghton and Jude Richards.
Jamie Keith dominated the 65 class again on Sunday with more holeshots and three race wins. Sonny Ronney went 2-2-3 for a second overall with Rhys Whyment third.
Another stacked gate of 85s in combined classes lined up on Sunday with two new additions from the previous day relegating Liam Johnston into third overall on the day in the Small-Wheels. Those two were Warren Clarke and Daniel Pierce.
It was a similar story to the previous day in the Big-Wheel class with Arai Elcock taking the overall. It was good to see Arai back racing in Cumbria following a nasty spill last year at Brampton. Robbie Park rode to second ahead of Grace Richards.
The Rookies class once again had plenty of talking points, plenty of spills and bike issues namely for Oliver Barr who ended up with a sheared rear shock bolt in moto one and a crash while on the charge in moto two. Despite following Jack Abbott home in moto one, Adam Slavin took first ahead of Abbott while Jake Sharkey completed the top three.
On to the Adults now and firstly the C class. Recent youth class graduate Thomas Lawrence took maximum points while Charlie Leech went second and Bradley Owens finished third.
The Over 30s again produced some great battles, Martyn Gregory took maximum points ahead of Richard Miller with Stephen Humphries adding to his solid championship total in third.
Liam Sommerville completed a successful weekend with another maximum points haul in the B class ahead of Ben Walsh. The returning Will Miller took his Suzuki to third overall.
The first A class moto had to be seen to be believed. Tony Craig had an issue at the start and was well down. However there was no stopping the Scotsman as he chased down and passed Jacob Joyce on his way to the first of three race wins.

Opinion: Our editor ponders Jacobi slapping Sterry's helmet
I’ve seen some pretty crazy stuff on the internet this week including a sidecar backflip, some bone-crunching crashes and even on-track violence that escalated between F&H Kawasaki team/room-mates Henry Jacobi and Adam Sterry.
RIP Ronnie Tate – old-school superstar
Ronnie Tate, who passed peacefully away in his sleep last recently aged 86, was one of my original racing heroes who survived older brother Maurice by just four months.
