News Motocross British Motocross Championship British Youth Nationals

The slippery chalks slopes of iconic nineties GP venue Foxhill, high above Swindon in Wiltshire, will host the third round of the 2023 Revo ACU British Motocross Championship this weekend (Sunday, May 14) and we’re promised that Red Bull KTM’s Jeffrey Herlings will be making an appearance to stir things up in MX1 – not that it needs it.

After the opening two rounds at Oakhanger and Lyng, it’s Harri Kullas (CAB Screens Yamaha) who leads the way but he’s got Crendon Fastrack Honda pairing Conrad Mewse and Josh Gilbert right behind him in the points chase. As things stand, Kullas sits on 95 points out of a possible 100 with Mewse second on 88 and Gilbert a further seven behind.

The battle for fourth is led by Shaun Simpson (SS24 Gabriel KTM) on 56 points with Brad Todd (C-Res/ Bikesport Honda) five behind on 51 with 2022 Foxhill MX2 winner James Carpenter sixth on 44 points.

The first hardpack race of the year, Foxhill could upset the applecart and let’s not forget that the record-breaking GP winner (currently with 102 GP wins to his name) is sure to run up front. It’s hard to imagine Herlings taking anything less than two wins on the day but this is motocross and almost anything can happen as defending champion Tommy Searle knows only too well.

So far this season the GTCI Revo Kawasaki team leader has suffered injuries and technical problems that have harmed his point-scoring potential but he’s getting better week by week and this could be the weekend that we see Searle back on the podium. It’s gonna be an interesting race meeting that’s for sure.

Isak Gifting (426 Motorsports Stebbings GASGAS) is the pacesetter in the MX2 class having won three out of four motos held so far. Wildcard Jack Chambers (MTX Big Van World Kawasaki) won last time out at Lyng but hasn’t appeared on the Foxhill entry list just yet. It was a last-minute decision for him to race round two in Norfolk and so don’t be too shocked to see him in Wiltshire. His mentor Zach Osborne made his British Championship debut at Foxhill in 2008 and has many fond memories of the Swindon super venue.

Currently second in points in ASA United GASGAS runner Bobby Bruce who has started the season in fine form both at home and on the GP trail. He’s currently second in points – 17 behind Gifting – but 22 clear of two-stroke evangelist Jake Millward (Verde Shiloh KTM) and Taylor Hammal (Gabriel KTM) who are tied for third.

Two-time MX2 British Champion Elliott Banks-Browne is rolling back the years on his 44 Motorsports Geartec Husqvarna and currently sits fifth in points. EBB was hauling at last year’s VMXdN and could very well find himself in the top three at the end of the weekend if he finds that form once more.

In the Youth 250cc class, GTCI Revo Kawasaki’s Billy Askew finds himself unbeaten so far in 2023 – can he keep his win streak alive at Foxhill? Hoping to knock Billy off the top spot will be Mckenzie Marshall (DK Offroad/FXR Yamaha), Liam Bennett (GMR/ Magic Mushroom/ Apico Husqvarna), Jak Taylor (WM Tatchell/ Apico Husqvarna) and Wiltshire local Domonic Newbury (426 Motorsport KTM).

As always the 250 Youth class will be mixed with the 125cc division where Reece Jones (SJP Moto KTM) and Wal Beaney (Store 114 KTM) currently lead the way with Jones holding a four-point advantage over his classmate. Jake Walker (Mr T’s KTM) is having a cracking year in his fort season on the big bikes and is another to watch at Foxhill as will wildcard Freddie Gardiner (MGMX KTM).

The mixed-class motos always provide some great viewing with those 125cc smokers sure to sound sublime as they scream out of the valley.

The BW85 class return to Revo action at Foxhill with a solid line-up of young stars who are all keen to impress. Josh Vail (SJP Moto) took the opening round by storm and leads the series on maximum points. Charlie Richmond (JP KTM) and Drew Stock (Madison/ Motoverde/ Mad4Motocross GASGAS) are tied for second with Cumbria’s Jamie Keith (MBRPX McGuigan KTM) just a few points adrift in fourth. With championship points on the line, the youngest group in action are sure to impress at Foxhill.

Event tickets for this round can only be bought at the gate for the following prices – Adult (£25), Children Under 15 (£5), Family (£55) with camping available at an additional £20. DirtWorld-TV will be providing Live Streaming from the event for £4.95 at dirtworld-tv.com/.

Of course, the best place to see all the action and soak up the atmosphere is at the track itself and Foxhill can be easily found just a few miles from Junction 15 of the M4 with the circuit postcode being SN4 0DR.
