Searle's loving Angels instead
By TMX Archives on 18th Jun 08
TOMMY Searle tops the world!Just two days after his 19th birthday Britain's best put himself firmly in command of the MX2 world series on Sunday with a devastating double victory at the classic St Jean D'Angely track in western France as Toni Cairoli and David Philippaerts both wilted under pressure.
Sebastien Pourcel delighted the home crowd with a determined double in MX1, but the man with the biggest grin in the class was Josh Coppins; the Kiwi finally turned around his season to twice chase the Frenchman over the line and move to within 19-points of the pacesetter Philippaerts. Kathi Prumm completed the colonial joy by taking over the WMX pink plate.
And there were also major scores for KTM UK duo Shaun Simpson and James Noble as well as points for Tom Church, Brad Anderson, Jason Dougan and Sophia Paull.
But there was also gloom in the UK ranks as Billy MacKenzie and Stephen Sword were both struck down by shoulder injuries which might prevent them from defending their lead in the Maxxis next weekend.
SEARLE had already shown his pace on Saturday by controlling his qualifier from the drop of the gate, but he had to work his way to the front during the early laps of race one on Sunday as Luigi Seguy, back on the MX scene as a wild-card after a year and a half playing in enduro, showed he had lost none of his fire by wiping-out half the pack at turn one, including Cairoli and Tyla Rattray.
The Italian was worst affected of all, his fuel tank split in the melee, but Rattray recovered strongly to advance from last to sixth in the 40 minutes.
Having at least avoided going down, Searle was quickly second to Simpson after Sword had gone down at turn two. The Molson man claimed he had touched Simpson's rear-wheel but the KTM man said he never felt anything. Seguy, still on two wheels, actually switched line to miss Stephen.
For four laps Tommy dogged Shaun before rushing him at the top of the start hill for a lead he was never to surrender again. Simpson appeared to be an equally secure second for half the race before a freak incident: "The back-end stepped out in the sand section and I got green fencing in the rear-wheel. It took an eternity to get most of it out and I had no rear brake for four laps.” Shaun deserved more than four points.
Sword's reward was also meagre for his effort – 14th after joining back in even behind Rattray – and the rest of the leaderboard was monopolised by Frenchies, though Dougan came home a strong 11th after riding himself out of four uncomfortable laps with armpump. Elliott Banks-Browne defied his Saturday injuries to go to the gate, and even gated top ten before the pain forced him to halt his brave attempt after five laps.
Already new leader of the points Searle was in no mood to let the red plate out of his grasp and holeshot race two to lead to the chequered flag: "Tyla got close at the end, but I was always in control. That was a great weekend, birthday, three wins, the red plate. I already gave that away though; I gave it to my dad for Father's Day!”
Simpson was initially second and only surrendered places to Cairoli and Rattray. The Italian slipped-off to lose second to the South African and had to let the KTMs go in the second half: "I suffered arm-pump after not racing the first race.”
The defeat of the Italian was sweet for Rattray as the Italian's mind games backfired: "He stole my gate after I had prepped it, just like he did in England. At least he said he would do be doing it this time, but I wasn't worried. I told him to take it, I would beat him anyway.”
Sword had quickly advanced to fifth but mid-race went down hard and was taken to hospital with a bone at the back of his shoulder protruding under his skin.”
Dougan was forced out after damaging the front-brake and Carl Nunn, faced with the disadvantage of not racing the opening moto, never had a chance of making the points.
As the season approaches halfway Searle leads Rattray by four points and Cairoli by 20, with Simpson, despite his first moto misfortune, still just seven points away from fourth. Let the Good Times roll!
