Silvester's the cream of the crop

WITH excellent track preparation by Andy Kay and the fine weather ordered by Darren Hudson, the track at Topcliffe was the new venue for the opening round of the Max Equipe North of England Twin-shock motocross, run by the Cumbria Twin-shock club.
Twin-shocks were the first to the line and in the Clubman class it was Martin Speak who took the race win with Geoff Shuttleworth closely behind. Speak went on to take races two and three and the overall on the day from Shuttleworth and Glen Wilson in third.
In the Twin-shock Expert class, Mark Silvester took all three race wins on the day, with Tom Holland and Russell Watson left to decide who would end up second and third, Holland eventually claiming second from Watson in third.
It looked like Mark Silvester was again on the pace in the Veterans class as he took the lead in race one, but he hit some trouble and let through Michael Du-Feu and Chris Rogerson, Silvester coming home eventually in third.
Silvester made no mistakes in the second race, taking the win, with Du-Feu right on his tail in second. In race three the two battled again, but this time Du-Feu took the win and the overall on the day with Silvester second and Rogerson third.
In the Modern C class, young Craig Hancock showed he is on the pace after moving up from the Big-wheel 85cc class last year. Hancock led all three races from the front to take the overall from Steven Sheavails and James Roe.
The B class saw three different race winners on the day, the first going to Darryl Tate closely followed by Steven Gibson and Ryan Harris. Race two saw M Dawson Jr take it ahead of Tony Makepeace and Callum Cree in third. Race three and Callum Cree won from Gibson and Tate, Cree taking the overall on the day too from Gibson and Tate with one point between them.
In the A class, race one winner was the stylish Jamie Smith who was ahead of the battle in second between three riders, Richard Cannings, Brad Mercer and Ashley Harland, eventually all finishing in that order. In race two and a man appeared who may have put pressure on Smith. Barry Turnbull took the lead but was soon overtaken by Smith who went on to take his second race win, Turnbull coming home second, Cannings and Harland third and fourth.
In race three Turnbull got the holeshot but binned it on the second corner and brought out the red flag. At the re-start, Turnbull missing, Smith took the lead ahead of Cannings and Mercer, and took his third race win to take the overall, Cannings and Mercer taking second and third respectively.
