SSDT update - Day one

FOLLOWING a wet Sunday weigh-in down at the west end car park in Fort William, Monday also dawned wet but thankfully turned into a cold but dry day just perfect for the 283 starters in the 2015 Scottish Six Days Trial.
FOLLOWING a wet Sunday weigh-in down at the west end car park in Fort William, Monday also dawned wet but thankfully turned into a cold but dry day just perfect for the 283 starters in the 2015 Scottish Six Days Trial.
And at the end of the day's 68 miles and 30 tough sections, including major groups at Leanachen, north of Fort William and Lagnaga, on the road to Oban the surprise first day leaders were Sherco riding Joe Baker and James Fry.
Joe and James both kept their feet on the pegs all day to hold off favourites, Vertigo riders Dougie Lampkin and James Dabill who dropped a single mark each, matched by Ross Danby and Gary Macdonald.
After a relatively OK opening day, although the opening four subs at Leanachen were tough on the club lads, no fewer than 35 riders were still on single scores although this will be drastically reduced over the next few days.
Both Ian Austermuhle and Jono Richardson suffered fives in exactly the same place at a new sub on Pap of Glencoe but at least Beta ace Austy was on his early start day and has now got that out of the way.
First timers Billy Bolt and Jack Price are riding together and amazingly both dropped four marks so that's a battle that will run and run.
With a dry day and mostly dry conditions there were few problems although several drowned bikes were reported on the moorland river crossing. Ian Weatherill saw his Gasser sink beneath the waves but after tipping it upside down, kicking the water out of the crakcases and administering a new plug Ian was on his way again.
Tuesday's forecast is for heavy rain so see how it panned out on here tomorrow.
