The Latvian spirit...
By TMX Archives on 2nd Jul 09
IT was rough and tumble at the demanding Kegums track in Latvia on Sunday, but in the end Toni Cairoli and Marvin Musquin each strengthened their 2009 world title ambitions as they increased their points leads to 57 and 49 points respectively; the Italian won his fourth GP of the year, whilst the Frenchman scored the same points as MX2 GP winner Rui Goncalves. The depleted UK squad again took more than their fair share of the knocks as Tom Church scored twice despite having his hand cut to ribbons, Jake Nicholls put his back out, Bryan MacKenzie recorded his finest-ever result on painkillers, Zach Osborne had to withdraw on Saturday, whilst a burnt out clutch cost Jason Dougan a second top ten finish. In the end only Mel Pocock started and failed to score after a sensational 14th qualifier finish, but Matiss Karrto was the darling of the home crowd at this first-ever Latvian MX1/MX2 GP.Report and Pictures: ALEX HODGKINSON IT was a knockabout weekend for Cairoli as the Sicilian unearthed another sparring partner in Clement Desalle. The Belgian had already knocked off the series leader during the Saturday qualifying heat and, after a clash with Ken De Dycker which left the Suzuki rider sprawling in the dirt, he relentlessly ran down Max Nagl in race one.
Cairoli, who started badly in both motos, put in a devastating last lap, the fastest of the race, but came up a quarter of a second short at the chequered flag. He admitted on live TV that he had not risked a collision in the final turn after being knocked off by Desalle the day before.
Both MX1 motos were a case of survival for most of the runners, both Nagl and De Dycker paying heavily for their early efforts in race one when they battled back and forth in the early stages. Nagl: "As soon as I slackened my pace a few laps in, the suspension wasn't eating up the bumps any more and I just kept hitting everything.”
Such was Max's early advantage that he still finished third, but experience was the key and Josh Coppins, who had built his race better than teammate David Philippaerts, was a strong fourth.
Nagl's lead lasted just one lap in race two before Desalle stormed past and the German eventually faded back to sixth, but De Dycker did not allow his French-speaking compatriot to escape as Cairoli and Coppins fought out of the pack again.
The series leader was taking no risks this time and ran down Desalle after 25 minutes, giving him a wide berth and establishing an advantage quickly.
The Belgian was already in trouble - "I had a problem with my clutch” – but salvaged fifth as Coppins ran down De Dycker to close down the battle for second in the points, Nagl taking over the role of leading chaser as defending champion Philippaerts had another disappointing race. Coppins viewed the day with mixed feelings: "I had a run of bad GPs, but I should have been podium already last week. The track is good, but I don't like the start. I had good starts but I got pushed wide each time.”
And he served notice that his title ambitions are not yet buried in his final season: "I will continue to be strong now.”
In what is as close as he has ever had to a home GP Tanel Leok effectively exited the title chase when he crashed out of a strong fourth in race one, leaving cousin Aigar to record his first top six finish since the Faenza mudbath. Tanel excused himself with a second moto fourth, but it will not be enough to salvage his chances of gold.
Tom Church had two battling rides to 12th and 17th, the second ride showing true grit as TC's hand had been ripped apart in Julien Bill's rear wheel in the early laps.
CCM teammate Jason Dougan was devastated to lose eighth in the opener with a burnt-out clutch; he regrouped however to come home 11th in race two.
Bryan MacKenzie had to quit the first moto after catching his right ankle in a rut: "I sprained it already in warm-up.” Remarkably the Scot turned out after an injection to come home 13th, his best-ever GP result, in race two. The CAS Honda had got to the first turn in front of Nagl, as had the CCM of TC, but the unfair start cost them both dear as the inside men pushed them out.
