The Lyng's effect
By TMX Archives on 22nd Apr 11
Just as MX1 series leader Shaun Simpson shipped out tofully concentrate on matters Continental a former World Champion Ben Townley popped in for a shakedown at Cadders Hill, Lyng.
The presence of Kiwi Townley absolutely underlines the awesome pulling power of the Maxxis British Championship - and it certainly gave the large crowd an extra dimension to focus on as the MX1 crew thrashed it out for the new red plate bragging rights.
In MX2 the Dixon Cosworth Wild Wolf Yamaha pairing of Arnaud Tonus and Zach Osborne truly have decimated the opposition in the Championship so far – a championship now without injured Mattis Karro.
At the end of the day down in sunny Norfolk all three championships ended up with a new leader so strap yourself in for a roller coaster ride that also includes round two of the MXY2 series - all dished up on a magnificent circuit superbly presented by the hosting Norwich Vikings club.
The Bike-it Dixon Yamaha duo of Zach Osborne and Arnaud Tonus performed their now customary 1-2 routine in qualifying with Zach taking the opening exchange but in Superpole the lay of the land was overturned by Mel Pocock riding a TAS Suzuki. Pocock nabbed second after Osborne made a small error leaving Tonus in pole.
Elsewhere in the group there were fantastic qualifying performances from local boy James Cottrell in seventh and Nathan Watson in tenth in only his third Maxxis event.
HM Plant KTM star Jordan Booker launched to the opening race holeshot but was soon out-gunned by the dynamic duo of Osborne and Tonus. The Yamaha pairing began to pull away at a blistering pace and looked set for another titanic scrap until disaster struck.
Tonus had clipped a stake on lap nine, causing damage to the right side of the engine and releasing all the water from the radiator. Game over.
Osborne cruised to victory ahead of a proper dust up for second place.
DB Honda's Elliott Banks-Browne just stole home second from LPE Kawasaki's Bryan MacKenzie and Ray Rowson on a Samsung Yam after the trio pushed themselves to the limit. Scott Elderfield, Lanes Kawasaki and James Cottrell (DB Honda) claimed fifth and sixth.
American hot rod Osborne stole a march on the MX2 field in heat two and rode unchallenged to a gate-to-flag victory. Behind him, however, a crowd pleasing race unfolded.
First EBB had a bash in second before being overhauled by a rampaging Mel Pocock who was seething after an ‘electrical DNF' in moto one.
Ray Rowson was in the hunt again, rejuvenated after two seasons on the side lines. Banks, nursing ankle ligament damage, dropped back to sixth after an error but was back to fourth at the flag. Rowson scored fifth.
The man on the move amid all the action was Tonus. Showing a rarely seen aggressive streak Tonus moved from a poor start and tenth on lap one to be on Pocock's rear wheel on half-way. On lap nine he dropped a shoulder and found a line through the trees which Mel could not counter. The 22 points went to Tonus and he went to the line for heat three fired right up.
Osborne gated again but Tonus soon caught and passed him to score a valuable race win and leave the title race too close to call.
Osborne had little need to chase his team-mate and buttoned his pace down to settle for second place and the winner's laurels.
Pocock was another fine third on a track he likes with Rowson and Banks just a few yards back in fourth and fifth. Elliott Banks had done enough for second on the day, a result which pleased the East Anglian crowd.
Rowson was on a Maxxis podium for the first time in three years and was chuffed to bits: "I'm really happy to be back on the podium, I just need some more results like this,” he beamed.
Osborne's 72-point haul gives him the series lead but as he and Tonus have a DNF each, the pair are split by just three points (191-188) heading to the halfway stage. EBB has pulled himself up to third in the championship on 157pts.
