Toni's over the top

DESPERATE conditions call for desperate measures, but Toni Cairoli once again went over the top at Bellpuig on Sunday. His antics cost the Sicilian the goodwill of more than one rival as well as the GP as two attacks misfired, but the sport had a home hero and a new winner by the end of the weekend.

All of the surviving Brits with the exception of Mel Pocock – frustratingly 21st – scored points, but UK hero of the day was Billy MacKenzie, the Scot bouncing back from a Cairoli assault in race one to scorch clear at the rate of several seconds a lap in race two before jarring his hand again and running out of track to end the race without a rear brake, courtesy of that wretched green fencing.
And for the second week in a row, 15-year-old Kenny Roczen gave his peers a lesson in racing!

MACKENZIE didn't gate top six in race one but, the CAS Honda now set up to his liking, he gave a glimpse of that same devastating pace which won him three GPs in Japan to scorch past all bar Jonathan Barragan in a hectic opening half-lap.
But then came the incident with Cairoli.
The Italian has become used to putting his front wheel under his rivals in MX2 and has got away with it on several occasions so far this year in MX1 too, but the Scot was not about to be intimidated, held his line and braced himself, but the impact was so great that he was thrown down the track with his cart-wheeling bike narrowly missing him.
The Scot felt it was a blatant take-out, and the only man to argue with that was Cairoli, who considered it ‘a normal pass' and also went down, splitting his fuel tank: "I didn't think I would make it to the finish, and was easy on the throttle.”
Not so easy that, having got onto the rear wheel of fourth placed Josh Coppins, he again launched one of his patented assaults but came off worse as the Kiwi saw him coming and nearly got out of the way.
"I touched Josh's rear wheel and crashed again, hurting my ribs.”
Cairoli finished eighth, MacKenzie 11th and a struggling Coppins, hit by an iron deficiency, fourth behind Barragan, Clement Desalle and David Philippaerts.
Ken De Dycker exited on lap one with a broken clutch lever after crashing with Tanel Leok, and the CCMs of Tom Church and Jason Dougan were 14th and,  the last men un-lapped in the race.
Barragan again shot to the front in race two, but MacKenzie was in determined mood and sprinted past and clear, a fall by the Spaniard leaving him 12 seconds clear within a few laps.
Max Nagl, pushed out at turn one in the opener from a poor gate, the result of a lowly qualifier after his gate failed to drop cleanly, had also broken clear of the rest and, when Billy hit trouble on lap seven, he was >>>
<<< ready to move in for the kill.
As MacKenzie dropped back, in pain and without a rear brake which would see him run out of track again later after bravely defying Cairoli and Philippaerts for a couple of laps, Nagl too built up a 12-second advantage before Cairoli could get to second.
With just three laps left, even the Italian would have accepted second, but poor Nagl was the victim of a lapper who ignored the blue flags: "I can't believe. The victory was mine and he simply blocked the line, I crashed and my lead was gone.”
Cairoli doesn't need a second invitation in such circumstances and he pounced on the final lap by flattening a table-top.
MacKenzie held onto fifth and TC again took points in 17th.

Second in the series, Spaniard Jonathan Barragan was the hero of the day for the home crowd after taking the overall in the MX1.
