Toni’s Thai high

It was KTM all the way in Thailand as Toni Cairoli took a double win to regain the MX1 red plate and team-mate Jeffrey Herlings maintained his 100% record in MX2.

Brits Jake Nicholls and Shaun Simpson had a torrid GP, but Tommy Searle continued to confirm himself as a growing threat in MX1, while Max Anstie put his Suzuki amongst the KTMs for third in the MX2 race.

Romain Febvre stepped it up to maintain Herlings' pace during the early laps of MX2 Qualification on Saturday, but the
Dutchman soon checked out when points were up for grabs on Sunday.

The JM KTMs both gated well and Febvre took advantage of a small slip by Nicholls to quickly take over second, but the
team-mates remained tied together until Jake crashed out big time at half-distance.

"I had no brake as I approached a jump we were scrubbing. I hit the face hard and crashed hard.  By the time I got back on the track I was down to eighth, but the throttle was sticking so I couldn't attack, and then on the last lap the throttle cable snapped.”

The East Anglian was credited with 19th.

Jake's exit from the leader-board was the signal for Anstie to move forward and the Brit ran down Butron and Charlier to take over third place.

"That's the first time I have felt I was riding like I can since I crashed in the States last month,” he said.

"And there is more to come. I can go where I want with the Suzuki and that makes it easy to ride smoothly.”

James Dunn was turning heads in the early laps as he held down a solid top ten slot and the teenager was still well in the points, along with an advancing Elliott Banks-Browne, as both HM Plant KTMs expired on the same lap 15-minutes into the race after boiling over all of their coolant.

Mel Pocock had a torrid race, admitting: "The strap of my goggles broke when we under starter's orders, so the team couldn't bring me a new pair.

"I stopped at the end of the first lap for a fresh pair, but that left me way off the back of the pack. I pushed through to 15th, but had nothing left at the end, after such a hard race in the heat.”

James Cottrell had his best GP ride to date to run 21st for much of the race. "I hit the wall at about 25-minutes, but I came strong again in the last couple of laps,” said James.
