Twisting the Heights away
By TMX Archives on 22nd Jul 11
Round five of the BYMX Youth Motocross Championship docked at a cool and damp but beautifully prepared Canada Heights, right next door to Brands Hatch in Kent. The inclement July weather certainly played its part in the entertainment as heavy rain on both days made for a slippery surface and gave new hope to some and crushed the dreams of others.
The main Youth championships have had many twists and turns in the previous four rounds but Canada Heights proved inspiring to Honda men Adam Sterry (Open) and Jack Gardner (BW), while KTM stars were at a loss with Liam Knight (BW) and Jay Hague (SW) now struggling to win their respective 85cc crowns.
To the action then, and a far closer 65cc Junior class than of late.
Alexander Brown aboard a Moto One KTM came into round five as series leader and so he remained holding off the attentions of Twisted Seven Kawasaki star Harry Kimber and Road and Track KTM youngster Jedalicious Jed Etchells.
Brown pinched heat one from Kimber despite falling early doors and gave up heats two and three to Kimber and Etchells respectively while collecting a couple more soil samples.
Despite taking a race each the chasing duo could not match their rivals' consistent results as Brown's three wins and two seconds were enough for his fourth overall of the season.
Kimber and Etchells grabbed the final two podium slots with neither rider carding a race outside the top five. Fourth overall went to a sparkling Callum Meara while Oliver Consterdine and Adam Dunn completed the top six.
The Small-wheel division has been, up to now, a straight fight between Southern former BYMX champ Conrad Mewse and Northern challenger Jay Hague, both racing KTM 85's.
With the title race still in the balance Hague had a weekend he would rather forget. Ducking it out at the front of race four Hague went down in a heap after shearing his triple clamp bolts, crocking himself sufficiently so to hold him back in the final sodden fracas.
Mewse, the benefactor, stole away for three race wins and the overall spoils. Despite not riding at his absolute best and being held to account by wild card Michael Ellis, Mewse's 1-2-1-1-6 card allowed him to extend his series lead to 32 championship points with Hague gutted, down in seventh overall.
Will Keogh has been the man in form of late and he used every ounce of skill he had to steer clear of trouble and record second overall just ahead of Taylor Hammal.
KTM UK-mounted Hammal brought his A-game to the Heights and promptly carded five top fives and his first overall podium of the year.
Jordan Eccles had a typically up and down weekend, nabbing two race wins but a couple of falls meant he could only gather enough points for fourth. Jamie Carpenter and Aaron Piper placed fifth and sixth.
