THE 2008 racing season may not yet be fully underway but RHL Activities has already opened entries for this year's Weston Beach Race which is due to be held over the weekend, October 11/12 at the usual venue on the seafront at Weston-super-Mare. Despite the increased cost of organising the event, RHL has pegged the entry fees for all solo competitors who entered last year, and the big news is that they are offering discounted entry fees for all riders who enter before April.
Last year's monster Weston entry of over 1,200, in the main caused by the beach blast celebrating its 25th birthday, did cause some organisational problems, simply from a logistical point of view. As a result of this, the solo entry list will be capped to 1,000 this year. So to avoid disappointment – and to save money – make sure you get your entry in as early as possible. It is a certainty that entries will be oversubscribed so if you want in, you can enter now.
Full details and regs/ entry forms are available on the official beach race website www.wbruk.com or from secretary of the meeting, Gary Ford on 01709-522177.
You can save a significant £40 if you enter early. If Adult Solo, Quad or Sidecar pay by April 20, the cost is just £100. Wait until August 15 and it will be £120 or if you wait until the final date of September 21 the fee will be £140. You can see it is well worth your while to enter early.
The solo entry is restricted to 1,000 competitors, Quads and Sidecars to 500 and the Youth 65cc and 85cc races to 150 each.
There are top cash prizes for all Adult races with the big Sunday solo winner netting a handy £1,000 with the podium placers pocketing £750 and £500 respectively. Cash awards go down to 15th overall while Saturday's Quads and Sidecars get prize money down to tenth.
The 25th anniversary event last year took the Beach Race to new levels and RHL is not sitting back on its laurels but planning to make further improvements to what is now the UK's biggest off-road motorsport event. Lessons have been learnt and acted upon and bigger and better access points to the beach and a specific viewing area for wheelchair users will be incorporated to improve facilities for the fans, while new improved bridges on the track will make for a safer environment for both riders and officials.
The classes for 2008 remained unchanged with the Youth Quad race being retained, and plans are also in hand to include extra non-race activity to complete the weekend programme and make the Weston Beach Race a true off-road motorcycle sport festival.
