While Eddy stays ‘Fast'...

PAUL Edmondson, the oldest rider in the Championship class at present, and newly-signed Kawasaki rider, David Knight, were the two big winners at the second round of the Metzeler British Enduro Championship, the Central Wales Auto Club-organised Knighton Enduro. Forty-year-old Edmondson topped the Championship class results on day one, while Knight fought back on day two to claim his first ever BEC victory on a Kawasaki... PAUL Edmondson has once again proven that, despite his ‘advancing' years, he's still more than capable of mixing it up at the sharp end of the Championship class by winning the opening day's competition at the Knighton Enduro.
Competing in the Enduro 2 class on an oversized 250F Suzuki, Eddy showed he's lost none of his ability to make the difficult look easy as he danced his way around the event's two slippery special tests and on to top honours on day one.
"I'm made up with the result,” commented Edmondson after the event. "Winning the first day was great. I had a good battle with Si Wakely and managed not to make any mistakes. The event was great, and I guess the special tests really suited me and my bike.”
With Edmondson claiming an eventual six-second winning margin, it was Husqvarna-mounted Wakely who topped the majority of the opening day's special tests, but a mistake on the penultimate motocross test cost the defending E2 champion victory on the day.
In addition to close competition at the top of the Championship class, the event also marked David Knight's return to the series, on Japanese machinery, this time Kawasaki. Although not quite up to speed on day one, David claimed third overall having clearly enjoyed himself. "It's great to be having fun on a bike again, "commented the Manxman.
With three E2 class riders filling the top three overall positions, KTM rider Greg Evans finished fourth overall on his 250F machine. Topping the E1 class, Greg was followed home by TM-mounted Philip McLaughlin with round one E1 class winner Daryl Bolter sixth. First 125cc rider home was Edward Jones aboard his KTM.
Working out what he needed to do to his bike in order to increase his competitiveness in enduros during the opening day, the changes Knighter made to his machine overnight certainly did the trick on day two. The Manxman jumped ahead of Edmondson to claim the overall Championship class win.
"I struggled a little on day one with riding too smooth and with suspension settings that were too hard. The changes we made to the bike made it much better on day two and I could attack the tests. Paul's a hard rider to beat around slippery, grassy special tests, so I'm pleased to have won the second day.”
Thinking he might just be able to pull off the double, Edmondson ended up nine seconds adrift of Knight having put in another solid performance.
One rider to see his result take a tumble on day two was Wakely. Unable to find his rhythm from day one, a couple of sizeable crashes near the end of the second day saw the Husky rider drop to seventh overall, a result he was far from pleased with.
Greg Evans improved to third overall on day two. Nine seconds adrift of Edmondson, Evans topped the E1 class, having ridden well throughout the event. "I'm really chuffed to have topped E1 on both days. I did make some mistakes on both days, but my results were still good.”
