Wrap up with Remedies
By TMX Archives on 2nd Jan 08
THE Remedies Bar Motocross Championship has now completed eight seasons down in the South West of England and has grown from strength to strength. During the 2007 series there was close racing in all classes...
In the Remedies Expert Open class defending champion David Yelland made a good start to the 2007 series, posting two wins from three starts at the opening round. However, he was denied the hat-trick by the 2006 Expert 125cc champ, Andrew Gillett, who had moved up to the Open class, with John May on a Meredith Suzuki also in the frame.
These three riders had a real ding-dong at the start of the season, with Jordan Rose also joining in, but unfortunately Yelland suffered a bad crash at Waggadon Farm which ended his season.
By the time the series reached round seven, Gillett had a fair lead over his challengers and was flying.
Jamie Skuse, another who had upgraded to the Open class for 2007, and George Davis were engaged in a good tussle and were soon joined by 2006 Remedies Junior champion, Kurt Brain.
After 11 rounds Gillett had built up to a commanding lead at the top of the standings, but he then fell victim to a bad crash at Pontrilas at a round of the British Four-stroke series and he too was out for the remainder of the season.
This left the door open for May to step up to the plate, but he didn't have it all his own way and was pressed by his rivals. However, consistent performances helped him to clinch the title with one round remaining.
Skuse put up a brilliant performance in the latter part of the series and was rewarded with runner-up spot. The unfortunate George Davis was denied third in the final points table with just two laps remaining of the final race. He crashed and this was sufficient to promote Brain to third overall.
The Bikeworx Expert 125cc Championship was a real close affair which went right down to the final round. James Dodd opened the season by winning the first race, but 18-year-old Welsh whiz kid, Danial Preston, went on to dominate the other two races and opened his account.
Round two saw Ashley Greedy on the scene but he only won two races at the event as Preston denied him in the other. If you were looking for consistency though, that had to be James Dodd who racked up a second and two thirds.
By round seven, Preston had a small lead in the points chase, but he was still to be pushed by Dodd and Darren Shears, back in action after a foot injury. Ben Griffith was also starting to shine.
Preston dominated round eight to increase his lead to 69 points, with Griffith his nearest challenger in all three races to keep the pressure on in second place in the Championship. By the penultimate round Preston still led but the pressure was starting to tell and it was Griffith who clawed some points back with two wins and a third, with Luke Hill who had dropped down to the 125 Championship taking the other win. Going into the final round Preston led by 58 points knowing he couldn't afford any mistakes and kept out of trouble and was to clinch the title after finishing fourth in 2006.
New to the Championship series in 2007 was the Phoenix Tools Over 35 class and this proved very popular and brought back some of the previous masters to ride competitively.
At the start of the season Portsmouth's Shaun Brooker set the early pace in the class with consistent high-place finishes. Race wins were shared about evenly but by round three things started to come alive with Gary Morrison, Steve Davey, Mark Gleadhill, Rob Lewis and Sean O'Neill all starting to push hard.
