Angel Stadium in Anaheim hosts the opening round of the 2025 Monster Energy AMA Supercross on Saturday, January 11. With all the main contenders fighting fit it’s one of the most anticipated starts to a season in the history of the sport. The forecast for the weekend is good with clear skies and a daytime temperature of 21 degrees meaning conditions will be prime on Saturday night.

Reigning champion Jett Lawrence lines up for HRC Honda alongside his brother Hunter. A 450 SX rookie in 2024, Lawrence will be looking to join Jeremy McGrath in the history books as the only riders to take back-to-back premier class crowns at the start of their careers.

The biggest threat to Lawrence on the night comes from former champions Eli Tomac (Star Racing Yamaha), his team-mate Cooper Webb and Chase Sexton (Red Bull KTM). Another former champion in the hunt is Monster Energy Kawasaki’s Jason Anderson although most of the focus on that team is on reigning MXGP world champion Jorge Prado who starts his first full-on attempt at taking an AMA title. Prado recently admitted he suffered a thumb injury during training and might not be at 100 per cent in California. Ken Roczen who is a two-time FIM World Supercross Champion but is yet to take the AMA Supercross crown can never be counted out either.

The 250SX West series also kicks off in California, with SMX and outdoor champion Haiden ‘Danger Boy’ Deegan (Star Racing Yamaha) identified as the pre-race favourite. The two-time SMX and National Pro Motocross champion is yet to win an indoor title and after coming close two times on the East Coast is focussing on the West Coast championship in 2025.

Deegan’s biggest competition in the 250 class is likely to come from HRC’s Jo Shimoda and last year’s winner, Levi Kitchen (Monster Energy Pro Circuit Kawasaki). Also expected to feature at the sharp end of the field are Jordon Smith (Triumph Factory Racing), Julien Beaumer (Red Bull KTM), Garrett Marchbanks (Monster Energy Pro Circuit Kawasaki), Ryder DiFrancesco (Rockstar Energy GASGAS), WSX SX2 runner-up Coty Schock and Jett Reynolds (both Muc-Off/FXR/ClubMX Yamaha). Also, keep an eye out for former British MX2 champion Dylan Walsh on a privateer Kawasaki.
