AMA SX series gets rowdy at Indianapolis Triple Crown
By Team TMX on 8th Mar 26
The 2026 Monster Energy AMA Supercross Championship rolled into the famous racing city of Indianapolis for round nine inside Lucas Oil Stadium, where Hunter Lawrence emerged victorious after a dramatic Triple Crown night to strengthen his championship lead.
The Honda HRC Progressive rider claimed his second win of the season thanks to a decisive victory in the final race, edging title rival Eli Tomac on the overall tiebreaker after the pair finished the night level on points.
A packed stadium witnessed another unpredictable Triple Crown format, where three short races often produce chaos – and Indianapolis delivered plenty of it.
Race one saw Ken Roczen storm to the front early on his Progressive Insurance Cycle Gear Suzuki machine and control the race from there, taking a comfortable 5.4-second victory.
Behind him the championship contenders battled fiercely. Lawrence finished second while Tomac fought through from outside the top ten to claim third. Cooper Webb crossed the line fourth after running second for much of the race, with Justin Cooper completing the top five.
Race two quickly turned chaotic when Roczen mistimed a rhythm section and collided with Aaron Plessinger on the opening lap, sending Plessinger out of the race and dropping Roczen to the back of the field.
Out front, Tomac moved into the lead after passing Cooper and appeared on course for the win. However, the Yamaha rider regrouped, clawed back the deficit and reclaimed the top spot.
Cooper held on for victory by 3.5 seconds over Tomac, while Webb finished a steady third. Lawrence’s race was compromised by an incident with lapped riders that dropped him from podium contention to fourth.
With the overall victory still wide open, the final race saw Lawrence and Tomac immediately establish themselves at the front.
Lawrence grabbed the holeshot and controlled the race from the outset, managing the deteriorating track conditions while steadily stretching his advantage. Tomac stayed within striking distance but could not close the gap.
The Australian maintained a clean run to the finish for a wire-to-wire win by 5.5 seconds, with Tomac second and Roczen rebounding to third. Webb and Cooper followed after another tight Yamaha team battle.
Lawrence’s 2-4-1 scorecard edged Tomac’s 3-2-2 results on the final race tiebreaker to secure the overall victory. Webb claimed third overall ahead of Cooper.
The result extends Lawrence’s championship advantage to four points over Tomac, with Webb sitting third but already 25 points off the lead heading into the championship’s lone off-weekend.
After a brutal Triple Crown night in Indianapolis, momentum firmly sits with the Australian as the series heads toward the second half of the 17-round season.
The Eastern Division of the 2026 Monster Energy AMA Supercross Championship produced a breakthrough ride for Cole Davies, who swept all three races of the Indianapolis Triple Crown for his first victory of the season.
The Monster Energy Yamaha Star Racing rider entered the year as a title favourite and finally delivered on that potential with a flawless 1-1-1 performance.
Davies set the tone immediately by taking control of race one and winning comfortably ahead of Jo Shimoda and Seth Hammaker.
Championship leader Pierce Brown faced early trouble and had to recover from a last-place start to salvage tenth.
Race two produced a thrilling duel between Davies and Shimoda as they chased early leader Jalek Swoll.
Davies eventually made the decisive move and once again pulled clear to take victory, with Shimoda second and Brown rebounding strongly to finish third. Hammaker crashed early and could only manage ninth.
Davies secured another strong start in the final race and again worked his way past Swoll to take the lead.
Behind him, Shimoda and Hammaker closed in late, with Hammaker making a final-lap pass for second as Shimoda briefly ran off track. Davies held firm to complete a Triple Crown sweep, winning by just 0.8 seconds.
Hammaker finished second in the race ahead of Shimoda, while Brown and Swoll completed the top five.
Davies’ dominant night gives him the points lead by one point over Hammaker, while Brown and Shimoda sit tied for third just two points behind.
With the first East/West Showdown looming, the 250SX title fight has suddenly tightened into one of the most competitive battles of the season.
