Bumper bag for Highland fling

Entries have finally closed for the 2019 Scottish Six Days Trial which will take place from Friday to Saturday, May 6-11 and the news as the hammer came down is that an amazing 551 hopefuls will be chasing the circa 280 places available. Thats a ratio of around 2 to 1.
This represents a 10 per cent rise in entries compared to the 501 who put their names down for the 2018 event. Its hard to say what is behind the unexpected spike in entries. 2017 was an exceptionally good year for weather and 2018 was always going to see a rise, which it did. But a 10 per cent jump on top of that is something of a surprise.
Next of course comes the dreaded ballot and this is where you trust to luck and await your fate. The only certainty is that there are going to be an awful lot of disappointed would-be riders.
In reality, there isnt a lot the organising Edinburgh club can do about it.
Given the unique nature of the event, with daily routes of up to 120 miles which of course makes the Scottish the event it is 280 entries is stretching it as far as possible if you are to finish days in daylight. As it is, observers and officials are out there for a minimum of six hours in all weathers and often considerably longer.
Best of luck in the ballot to all who entered.
