News Trials

With a fantastic ride, Joe Snelling on his GASGAS won a closely fought, low-scoring Dick Dickenson trial, and with his win, he took home the Simmons Cup. The historic cup trial has been run since 1929 – this was its 68th edition.

Snelling took control at the very start of the event, cleaning all 15 sections on his opening two laps. But with his eyes on cleaning the whole event, he approached his third and final attempt at Section One, it all went wrong. He had a surprising dab where on his previous laps, he had easily cleaned it like most of his fellow Expert riders. He must have been slightly disappointed with his single dab, but that small loss was still enough for him to win the event with its prestigious trophy.

A steady ride for Joe Snelling bagged him the Simmons Cup for winning the Dick Dickenson Trial

Mason Meadows (Beta) was also having a great day. For the first two laps, he was matching Snelling section for section, and he took the lead when Snelling had his single dab. But four sections later, he had a two, which dropped him back to the runner-up spot by a single point.

Working out third and fourth places was a nightmare, as Richard Ely (Scorpa) and Jack Stiles (GASGAS) lost just four marks.

Sophie Bailey battled away to a top-10 finish

Ely had a bad start as he had a two on section three on his opening lap and added a single dab later in the lap. He had one dab on his second lap and cleaned the whole of his third and last lap.

Stiles' story was similar to Ely’s. He scored a two in section two and a single in Section 11. He added another point when he attempted Section 11 on lap two and, like Ely, cleaned the third lap.

The highest number of cleans would decide third and fourth place. But that was another problem, as both talented riders had 42 cleans. So, it came down to the furthest clean, with Ely taking third and Stiles taking fourth.

Harley Stephens romped to victory in the Expert B class

PR guru Harley Stephens (Beta) had a dab on lap one and another on lap two. He backed that up with a clean last lap to with the easier Expert B class.

With a dab here and there, Robbie Nutbrown (Sherco) was runner-up, losing just seven marks. An unfortunate five at his second attempt at Section 14, a section he cleaned twice in the trial, dropped Lee Brocklehurst (GASGAS) to third place, with Mark Reason (Beta) fourth, just two points behind.

Thomas Norris (GASGAS) won the Intermediate class with a loss of just seven marks. Graham Thomas (Montesa) and Max Whorlow (Beta) tied in second and third on 17 points lost, with Thomas getting the runner-up spot by virtue of 37 cleans to Whorlow’s 30.

Marc Taylor won a small Intermediate B class on his Beta.

The Novice class was very close, with James Bayant (GASGAS) and Daniel Isard (TRRS) finishing the 45-section event with the loss of just six points. Once again, the winner was decided by the highest number of cleans, with Bryant getting 40 to Isard’s 39. Robert Snelgrove (GASGAS) was third, just three points off the winner’s score.

Steve Mannerings (GASGAS) won the hotly contested Over-40 class riding the blue route. Neil Challice (TRRS) finished just one point behind him with Adam Marshall (GASGAS) in third but tied on points with Martin Stephens (GASGAS).

Richard Johnson (GASGAS) rode all 45 sections dropping just one dab to win the Over-50 class. Warren Eves (Honda) was a single point behind him, with Anthony Slater (Sherco) third.

Tony Martin took third place in the Pre-67 Twinshock class

Simon Bird (Yamaha) was the only rider in the Twinshock class riding the blue route and finished with the loss of just eight marks.

Gary Roberts (Fantic) was the only rider to complete the trial without putting a single foot down in the Pre-67 twinshock class riding the red route. Robin Whorlow (Yamaha) was second, on three, and Tony Martin (Triumph) was third.

Edward Mowat was the leading Youth rider on the day

Edward Mowat (GASGAS) won the Youth Expert class, and Max Robinson (Beta) won the Youth Intermediate class.

Tristan Phipps (TRRS) won the Youth Novice class, and Celeste Phipps (Beta) won the Youth Sportsman class.
