Gerrit and Colin take on Telford
By Team TMX on 11th Dec 17
Two-time world 500cc vice-champion Gerrit Wolsink and four-time British sidecar trials champion Colin Dommett are the star guests at the Telford Classic Off-Road Show on February 17/18.
The Dutch dentist formed a formidable factory Suzuki duo with Roger De Coster and was a giant of 70s motocross, finishing in the top five of the world championship every year from 1973 to 1979.
Apart from winning many European GPs, he is remembered for stemming the flow of American dominance by winning the US GP five times. His first success in 1974 in front of 33,000 fans at Carlsbad Raceway has been immortalised in motocross folklore.
After his career was over he remained active in the sport, promoting events, running the Dutch GP at Valkensward and acting as Clerk of the Course for the ISDT.
Dommett has done it all solo trials for the Cotton factory, competing in the ISDT, branching into classic scrambling and latterly becoming the voice of the classic scrambles scene behind the commentators microphone.
He still competes but his greatest moments came in sidecar trials when between 1976 and 1980 he won the British crown four times three on a Beamish Suzuki and once for Bultaco.
A supreme conversationalist, Colins recollections in his broad Cornish drawl will certainly captivate his listeners.
Eurosports Jack Burnicle will interview both guests on stage each day and the pair will talk at the shows Saturday evening dinner at the Holiday Inn right next to the shows base in the International Centre.
As usual the halls will be full of all the classic off-road bikes and parts, the outdoor autojumble area is back for another year and following a two-year absence the Michelin bike balancing competition returns.
