The Cleveland show is go
By John Dickinson on 22nd Mar 18
Even though there is a clash of National dates in the north this Sunday with the North Derbyshire clubs Bemrose and the second round of the Kia Twinshock series running on the same day Middlesbrough DMC have attracted a superb entry for their famous Cleveland Trial.
With JST Gas Gas rider Michael Brown from nearby Scarborough looking to grab the magnificent trophy once again, there will be stiff opposition from the likes of fellow JST man Dan Peace from just over tmoor top at Kirkbymoorside, Whitbys Andy Chilton on the AM Scorpa and Beta-mounted Guy Kendrew from Faceby
Then theres Shercos 2018 signing Jack Sheppard, making the long trip north from Ipswich, looking to kickstart his season with a National victory, while Scorpa-mounted Gary McDonald will be heading south from Kinlochleven.
Add in Richmond club rider Rob Waite plus World and British Womens Champ Emma Bristow and theres plenty of skill on show. A strong Intermediate class is headed by Gas Gas UK boss John Shirt and local riders Stevie Hind, Shane Monkman and Karl Dodderidge all striving for a good result in front of a home crowd, while the likes of Mark Sunter will surely be in the mix.
As usual the Clubman class is wide open and if experience counts then Roger Williams will be thereabouts as will Steve and Alan Williams, Alan Carr, Mark Coulson and Kevin Tate. If Youth prevails then Luke Jackson, Sam Haywood and David Coulson will all be pumped and ready.
In charge will be Paul Wright and weather permitting, it could be a 30-mile lap around the North York moors, with a similar number of sections. Early groups worth watching and within easy walking distance are Commondale moor and Clitherbeck, while Poverty is a bit longer trek but a good group.
Then be sure not miss the finale at the boulder strewn long-standing final group in Stormy Hall when nerves are taut. To enjoy a full day of top quality National action head to the Castleton village cricket club ground near the station (YO21 2EU) for 9.30am to see first rider away. And if you get there earlier you can enjoy a breakfast at the Eskdale Hotel.
