Trials Torque: Kia’s going right down to the wire
By John Dickinson on 28th Sep 16
THE 2016 KIA National Twin-shock Championships is approaching its climax with the eighth of the nine-round series taking place this Sunday, October 2, courtesy of the Hillsborough club in south Yorks.
With seven of the nine rounds to count for the Championship the maths is a bit tricky for your humble columnist!
But by using all my fingers, toes and an abacus I reckon that Consett, Co Durham farmer, Colin Ward Sr has already won the Expert Air-cooled mono class.
Colin's son, Colin Ward Jr, has most definitely scooped Air-cooled mono Clubman class, Yamaha TY-mounted like his dad, and east Yorks rider Dave Wardell on his 200 Fantic is unbeatable in Clubman Twinshock.
All the other classes are up for grabs and will probably go right to the wire. Richard Allen has just a couple of marks in hand over Wayne Jones and Roy Palmer, on his infamous Kawasaki four-stroke, in the Expert Twin-shocks.
And in Expert Historic Lancastrian Robert Taylor on his 349 Montesa has just a three-mark cushion from north east challenger Gary Younghusband on his Bultaco.
There's loads of variety in the Expert Brit-shock class with Mark Stokes on his shiny and meaty 500 Trifield just five marks ahead of Martin Stanistreet on his little 197 James.
Steve Fletcher and Gary Hawkins dispute Clubman Histsoric on 175 Yamaha and 349 Montesa respectively while in Brit-shock Pete Edwards on his Bantam is chased by 250 Cotton riding Ossy Byers, who travels with Gary Younghusband and Butch Robson.
The action will take place at Ughill, near High Bradfield, north of Sheffield, over an all off-road course with two laps of 20 sections and a 10am start.
