TWELVE-year-old Iwan Roberts, currently national Class C Trials champion, wisely resisted changing his trusty 80cc Betws Motors Beta machine at the end of the 2008 championship season.
A slim but taller Iwan rode the same Beta machine in the first three rounds of the 2009 championship series while his parents Mo and Iwan considered the options. Although Iwan scored points in one of the three events it was obvious that his 80cc machine was being outclassed. The much harder Class B age group championship included older and much stronger boys and girls, riding the more powerful 125cc machines.
When riders reach the age of 12 years, they can move from 80cc to 125cc powered machines and, to get the feel of more power, Iwan rode his brother Sion's 125cc Gas Gas at the Welsh Championship at Pontypool, where he won the Master's Class. That ride alone was enough for his parents to order a new 125cc Beta Evo from importer John Lampkin.
The Roberts collected the new machine last Wednesday from John Lampkin's and Iwan now has three weeks to learn new riding techniques before the next championship round on May 3, at Holloway, Derbyshire.
