DOUGIE Lampkin was struck with a freak injury at last weekend's World Championship Trial in the Czech Republic and while seventh place is not what Doug is looking for, at one point it was looking like he would not even be able to start the trial.
Doug didn't even crash - early in Saturday's practise session he appeared to twist awkwardly and was suddenly in intense pain in his shoulders. An inspection revealed a knot' of muscle or ligament and no amount of manipulation in the region gave Doug much relief.
Phyllis Calvert, who attends many World Rounds with Ian Abbott, supporting the British lads, was able to help as she suffers back problems and had some equipment - including electric shock gear - with which to treat Doug.
The end result was that Dougie was able to compete on Sunday but was in acute pain at times and given the circumstances, seventh place was a real result. Doug flew back to England first thing Monday morning and was due to visit the doctor first thing. He is due to wow the crowds at the Goodwood Festival of Speed this weekend on his Beta as a special guest of Lord March. Doug has a brief to ride round the huge event (accompanied by a health and safety crew) and perform off-the-cuff stunts as and when the opportunities allow. Not even Doug knows what he will be doing!
