MARTIN Benbow, riding a 450 ATV World Yamaha, won the sixth and final round of the QRA's British Quad Endurance Championship at a wet and windy Llangrove, deep in the heart of Wales. But while Benbow won the round in the pre-class, it was the on-form Paul Winrow, on his 450 Winrow Honda, who took the championship by 11 points from last year's winner, Steve Atkins, riding a Suzuki.Heavy overnight rain finally stopped as racing was about to start and the rest of the day was wet but rain free all be it under a grey overcast sky. Winrow was unbeaten in the opening five rounds and led the riders round the first of 20 laps that went deep into the forest, and after the first hour was up he was still out in front.
Chris Cook, Benbow and Clint Eagle were all in touch with Winrow but Atkins was back in sixth place on his Suzuki.
At the end of the second hour, Winrow had suffered a small number of little problems and had slipped down to sixth while Benbow had upped his pace and found his way into the lead.
Atkins to was making progress and was now up to third, having passed both Cook and Eagle and was just behind Ben James.
At the end of the three-hour event Benbow was the winner by just under a minute from Atkins, Eagle, and John Robson while Winrow finished in fifth place and was the champion for 2008.
The Expert class was a mess as an unnamed rider was excluded after the event for changing machines during the race and changing back to his original bike before the end. This is against the rules, but there is an ongoing appeal so the results my still be changed, but this is how it went on the day.
Darran Bridge on his 450 Yamaha led the event from start to finish with Lewis Hill being passed in the third hour by Ian Johnson for second and third.
