...and Toni Bou gets the Gold!

Colunists

NO two ways about it, the British round of the World Trials Championship - amazingly the last of the 2012 series - was a runaway success. The weather wasnt amazing but the crowds which turned out sure were.

It was an absolute pleasure both to see  - and be part of such a large turnout of trials fans.

Listening to the many and varied conversations it is at events like this that drives it home how little I actually know. Just enough to be dangerous is the conclusion I always come to but it is
comforting to know that when I inevitably get something wrong there is always someone out there who can put me straight.

Thanks are definitely due to promoter John Kerwin who, don't forget, puts his own hard cash on the line. I certainly don't have the commitment to do that. It is easy to say, "Why doesn't he do this?” or "Why didn't he do that?” but when its not your money at stake talk really is cheap.

Well done to section plotter Graham Jarvis as well. Many of us could probably come up with sections suitable for the Youths and Juniors but it takes a person of special knowledge and experience to get a World Championship course right. Just where is that line between  just possible and impossible? Martin Lampkin can do it and so can Graham Jarvis - both champion riders of course. If I had a flat cap I would doff it to them.

I guess you, like me have already been burning the midnight oil watching the Olympics. And, beach volleyball aside lads, it is possible to get involved  in sports you would swerve at any other time.

It did cross my mind that given the timing of the British Championship Trial it would have been the perfect opportunity to have included it as an Olympic sport.

So the trial took place in Cumbria? So what?

The sailing takes place off the south coast! I thought they were trying to be more inclusive and not so bloody London-central.

It is called the London Olympics but as taxpayers nationwide have been made to pay for it - all 10 billion quids worth - the least they could do is throw us hayseeds out in the sticks a few crumbs. Not that we're bitter or anything!

And if some of the stuff that masquerades as a sport (fill in your own blanks - personally, I'd start with anything that includes the word
‘synchronised') of sufficient quality to be included in the Olympics, trials qualifies in spades.

Toni Bou, Olympic Gold. What's wrong with that?

Trials was actually included at the 2005 World Games (for sports not included in the Olympics)in Germany, if my memory serves me right, when Dougie Lampkin, Steve Colley and Graham Jarvis represented Team GB.

Someone will tell me if I'm wrong...!
