Donnelly lifts the Lydd
By TMX Archives on 30th Jul 08

AT the fifth round of the All Spares British Superquader Championship at Lydd, on Sunday, Aaron Ebbitt led the first race for six laps before fuel delivery problems ended his race prematurely.
Yamaha-mounted Gareth Thomas had an early hold on second spot, to which he was relegated in the penultimate lap when Mark Donnelly took over the lead position. Mark finished four-seconds clear from Gareth but this pair were over 20-seconds clear of third-placed Mike Taylor, with Steve Butler in fourth.
Matt Lawry had his own battles mid-pack to hold on to fifth spot as Craig Kilner moved up three places, while avoiding the advances of Gary Powell to grasp the top 450cc points.
Meanwhile, Daniel McDermott, the top Irish contender, had to retire on the fifth lap with machine problems.
In race two, Donnelly took the win after battling once again with Gareth Thomas, and Daniel McDermott had his work cut out as he set about moving through the pack to eventually finish in third spot.
Ebbitt, back out again for race two, deposed Steve Butler on his way to fourth place. Mike Taylor who had started out in fourth also demoted Steve one place on the final lap to secure fifth.
In the third and final race, Donnelly secured himself maximum points, as McDermott got back on form and claimed second, making the trip over the water a lucrative one for the Irish riders.
This meant that Gareth Thomas had to settle for third place in the final race, but well deserved it was too after some great battles out at the front with Mark in the first two encounters, and then with Aaron in the final to hold on to the third place trophy.
Gary Powell had a much better start in the final race but his misfortune left Craig Kilner as the top 450cc points-scorer on the day.
To make the most of their long journeys and a great track, the Quad riders were offered a second day of action on Sunday.
