THE Veteran World Cup, so enthusiastically welcomed by Donington Park Leisure and Youthstream, sank into the quagmire of FIM bureacracy at the weekend.
Chuck Sun, 1980 US 500 champion, had accepted theinvitation to race a CAS Honda in the Senior class (40-50) but wasdevastated on his arrival to be refused a start by the FIM.
Although still 50, Chuck had reached his half century last December and a
scrutiny of the regulations revealed that the FIMrules restrict the holding of a standard licence to the end of thecalendar year in which a rider reaches that age.
And participation in the Veteran class is restricted to riders who are already 51!
Glenn McGovern, who contested the elder class, wasadamant: This trip has cost me $20,000 but many of my compatriotswere considering entering next year. But when they hear how Chuck hasbeen treated, no-one will come.''
The weekend wasn't a complete loss for Sun,however, as he took part in a parade lap with none other than StefanEverts during the interval on Sunday, to the delight of the Britishfans.
