WITH the Scottish Six Days Trial now just over two months away (Monday to Saturday May 5/10) the time has come for those riders lucky enough to have secured an entry (cue howls of derision from those who didn't!) to think about their servicing arrangements for the week.
In a nutshell, for the benefit of first-timers who may not know about these things, this boils down to which make of machine you are riding. If you are one of the vast majority who is riding one of the current five major marques, Beta, Gas Gas, Sherco, Montesa or Scorpa, then you are in luck. Each of the importers will provide servicing arrangements for riders' of their machines. Each handles things slightly differently but basically there will be a servicing area, you will very likely be able to use a set of commoin tools, the use of specialist tools, air-compressor plus you can pick the brains of a top-class specialist mechanic. You'll probably also be able to blag free squirts of chain lube, WD40 and suchlike. It all gets a bit hectic at times but definitely makes the week more enjoyable as you fettle your bike in convivial surroundings.
Each importer will also have stocks of all service items such as air-filters, brake pads, etc which you can purchase plus, as long as you give them sufficient warning, the importers will also take to Scotland any last minute spares you may need.
All you need now are some numbers!
For Montesa you want Sandifords on 01282-428383. Sherco is Malcolm rRathmell Sport on 01423-772885, for Scorpa it is Nigel Birkett on 01229-716806, for Beta you need John Lampkin Imports on 01535-655970 and for Gas Gas it is Gas Gas UK (John Shirt) on 01298-766813.
There you go, get yourself sorted and hopefully you'll hgave a hassle-free week - and even if you have trouble you won't be on your own!
