It'll be reet at Reeth!
By TMX Archives on 22nd Jul 11
What do you get when you ride the Reeth Three Day Trial? The answer is simple, half a Scottish Six Days trial but in Yorkshire and with 90% less road miles. Three days of superb trials in the heartlands of the Scott Trial and utilising many of the famous sections.
And the bonus is three-days of socialising in Grinton Showfield where everything and anything can and does happen! And it is happening this weekend -- July 22/23/24.
On Friday morning Richmond Motor Club turns another page in the history of the trial which moves into its ninth year, but for the first time as a national status event. Eleven local sponsors oil the wheels of progress and without them organising would be a mammoth task so support Harkers Coaches at Reeth, Cliff Addison Drainage at Yarm, The Red Lion at Langthwaite, NLS Contracts in Arkengarthdale, GKM Computer Supplies in Darlington, NF Brown & Son in Richmond, JW Porter & Sons in Oxnop, Claytons of Carlton, Andrews Building Co (Lathbury), Robinson's Joiner Ltd in Richmond and Wiltshire Farm Foods at Harrogate.
And big thanks to all the friendly farmers and landowners who allow trials riders to enjoy three-days of bliss on the many acres of prime land. Land that is private before, during, and after the trial!
Friday brings signing-on with local rider Julian Holmes kicking his machine into life at 11am along with Leyburn's Stuart Hall to lead off a total of 200 entrants.
Scott Trial Clerk of Course Bruce Storr and his team mastermind the first day which heads for the Woodyard, Fremington Edge, Hurst, Rubbin House, Clapgate, Cold Knuckles and Underbanks.
The start order rolls on Saturday so Scarborough's Gary Collinson and Russ Rooksby lead the field towards Bleaberry Ghyll, By-Pass, Whaw Bridge, Bridge End then a long loop curving round the moors north of Hurst. The course has been plotted by Nathan Stones and his team who have been working right on their home plot.
Sunday brings the change with Andrew Brown planting flags through well-known areas such as Cogden, Grinton Ghyll, Underbridge, Brown's Ghyll then a short lap above Gunnerside which takes in Shaw and the lunch stop, then Upper and Lower Summer Lodge.
Not all the sections are open to the public but expect 35 sections on each day with awards for the leaders on the day.
So to the social happenings. Friday brings the Riders and Landowners Social Evening in the marquee -- a ticket only bash -- with catering again courtesy of Swaledale Caterers. The landowners, game keepers and farmers will be the centre of attention.
On Saturday night local band 'The Blind Boys' from Richmond will rattle the rafters while the revellers tackle curry, pork loin rolls and minced beef complete with giant Yorkshire Puddings.
The results team will be toiling away every day to produce full results plus a final spread sheet ready for the awards ceremony on Sunday evening.
Early starters on Friday will be Richard Timperley, Richard Sadler (second last year) local Will Reynolds and Dan Farrer.
The early birds on Saturday are Russ Rooksby and on-form Matt Maynard. Jonathan Richardson, Adam Milner, James Fry and Cornish brothers Keelan and Ross Hancock make the long haul from Bodmin for the first time.
The first big guns to fire on Sunday include Tom Hick, Isle of Man expert Nigel Crellin, Chris Pearson, Dan Thorpe and Danny Gamble.
Thorpe was a dab out last year behind winner Darren Brice followed by Fry, Pearson and Askrigg veteran Phil Alderson. And the glamour entries? Caz Alford, British Champion Becky Cook, Hannah Styles, Emma Bristow, Kathryn Wardle, Katy Sunter, Harriet Peacock and Isle of Man top female rider Saskia Baxter. And those eight ladies are not riding to admire the views. They all mean business.
Final instructions to all visiting the trial, don't climb fences and walls, don't park where you will block roads and tracks, don't venture where it says ‘no go'.
The milk tankers and farm delivery vehicle drivers work seven days a week so bear that in mind on the very narrow roads.
The official programme is a must-have. Programmes and polo shorts will be on sale at the start field -- and a full report with pictures will be in T+MX next week!
