FOLLOWING the opening round of the new British Supercross Championship at the Sheffield Arena last Saturday, which was a success despite the incessant doom and gloom mongering by the national press, the next major motorcycling event at the venue will be the Sheffield Indoor Trial. Saturday, January 3, is the date for your diaries when Avondale Management, headed by Neil Crosswaite and Martin Lampkin, return for an amazing 14th consecutive year with a top class International Indoor Trial.
And the big news this year, after several years as a stand-alone event, is that Sheffield will be the opening round of the official 2009 SPEA FIM World Indoor Motorcycle Trials Championship.
The six-man field is comprised simply of the six best riders in the world, led by reigning World Indoor and Outdoor champion Toni Bou and his factory Repsolo Montesa. The crowd favourite though will be legendary Brit Dougie Lampkin, seven times World Outdoor champ, five times Indoor champ and King of Sheffield on no fewer than eight occasions!
Dougie still gets fired-up for Sheffield like no other event and if this is the last time
that he competes in the even as he has every single year since its inception then he really would like to make that nine wins!
It's a stiff task though as up against him will be former Outdoor and Indoor champ Adam Raga, back to his confident best on the factory Gas Gas, Bou's team-mate Takahisa Fujinami, sure of big British support following his recent fantastic Scott Trial debut, plus Catalonia's Albert Cabestany and Jeroni Fajardo.
T+MX will be keeping you right up-to-date with Sheffield news in the short run-up to the event it's nearer than you think with a major article coming up in the next couple of weeks.
Meanwhile, tickets are priced at 29.50 for adults and 19.50 for children of 14 and under and if you want a good seat you can get yours now by contacting the Sheffield box office on 01142-565656.
