Sidecars hit a Peak

THE National Peak Trial on Sunday will not be the usual cliffhanger event as the final round of the ACU British Sidecar Trials Championship as it has been for many years .

It is still the last round but Bristol crew Jon Tuck and passenger Matt Sparkes have nailed the top title weeks ago as have Seemond Stephens and Gary Davey in the Inter class. The Newcomer class, according to the standings spreadsheet, tells me that David Wilcox and Michael Ripper, who have not entered the Peak, top the scoreline on 122 with Tim Walker and Paul Norman lurking on 107 points but if they win, their dropped-score puts them down to 112 so Wilcox and Ripper have the job sorted.

Not so the Clubman title. Chris Dakin and John Stanley no-scored at Mansfield in June so their drop-score is sorted which leaves class leaders Gareth Andrew and Keith Morcom with the task of scoring high or watching Dakin and Stanley coming on strong on Sunday in the Derbyshire hills.

David Pearson has sorted the course, as last year. He has Elmore Hill (five sections), Offerton Hall (ten), Berrsytalle Lodge (five), Oxlaw (four) and the nightmare finale of the towering Backtor where a dozen sections will take their usual heavy toll of marks.

Shortage of observers may be the problem so if you can help out please contact Judy Farrer - 01246-414022. The one lap event will feature 19 sidecars, plus

40 Clubmen and eight Expert ranked

competitors in the supporting Solo class. Dan Thorpe, Chris Pearson and Richard Timperley will all have recovered from last Saturday's Scott Trial and should battle it out for solo glory.

Paul Churchill and Andy Searle lead the chairs away from the start, which is the Blue Circle Cement factory at Hope in Derbyshire at 8.30am while Lea Kirwin fronts the solo clases at 9.21am.
