TMX Says: Off-road hoard comes in handy

THE 24th means a lot of different things to a lot of different people but up here at TMX Towers it means one thing and one thing only and thats pay day!

For some of us this most special of days brings the opportunity to buy essentials like food, gas, electric and clothing, although luxuries like those might have to wait a wee while just now as this will be our last input of cash before Santa visits in just over a month's time.

Christmas is something that totally splits opinion up here at TMX Towers with half the crew being totally Grinch-like and the others, proper giddy kippers.

Beth's so excited she put her tree up weeks ago, Gav has already purchased his Christmas jumper and Jay has made a ton of trips to Argos to bag a bargain or two for the kids.

I'm waiting until pay day +5 to start my shopping as that's when the bulk of the big bills will be paid – mortgage, life insurance, house insurance, car tax and insurance, pet insurance, insurance insurance, gas, electric and water, council tax, phone bill, TV and internet package, credit card and loan payments.

After that if there's anything left then I may just go out and buy some presents. If not I'll have to get creative and make my own...

Making gifts from old off-road stuff is surprisingly simple provided you're able to let go of some of the ‘must keep' bits you've hoarded over the years.

For example, helmets make excellent hanging baskets, old tyres can be stacked up and used as planters or cut in half and then wall-mounted to make an excellent shelf.

Old chains can be repurposed in many ways – tea light holders for the missus, jewellery for your goth cousin Gareth and so on and so forth.

While we're on the subject of drive train products, sprockets are absolute gold for this kind of stuff and rears can be used as clock surrounds, shelf supports and even as picture frames, while the fronts make awesome drinks coasters.

Some of that old kit can be useful too – plastic body armour always go down a storm with young Star Wars fans as do old Scott and Oakley face masks.

Of course, it should be said that some vintage race wear – certain brands especially – sells for an absolute fortune on eBay these days and the right ‘find' in your stockpile could potentially cure your seasonal financial woes...

Having moved house a couple of times in the past few years my own collection of classic gold is dwindling somewhat, although I did find an absolute doozy of a piece the other day from my days on the GP tour.

Basically, it's a commemorative piece issued by Youthstream back in 2008 to certain handpicked members of the media celebrating Giuseppe Luongo's ‘25 years of excellence in motocross organization'.

This excellence apparently started with the 1983 Italian 125 GP at Ponte a Egola and has continued ever since.

It's actually a really cool little thing, although as one of the least popular promoters in the history of the sport I doubt that it holds much interest to anybody.

I do think it'd be really cool to know what you've got in your own personal stash though, so let's get sharing.

Send images and a description to me at the usual email address and we'll share some of the best in coming weeks...
