Weston Beach Race - Youth Solos

A RECORD number of Youth competitors rolled out onto the Weston sands across the weekend to play their own unique part in the 25th anniversary celebrations, with 290 hardy young souls tackling the energy-sapping dunes and motor-munching sand across the Youth Quad, Junior 65cc and 85cc races.

Always a popular draw with the crowds of spectators, the Youth classes proved to be some of the most exciting and closely fought of the weekend, the dry weather and track making things just that little bit easier for the majority of the racers.

YOUTH 65cc

A fierce battled raged at the front of the 62-strong 65cc race as reigning class champion and recently crowned BYMX champ Ben Watson duelled with the Isle of Man's Callan Cooper for supremacy early on.

Callan held the early advantage courtesy of a flier of a start, but Watson knows how to win Weston and had already clawed his way into second place and looked menacing when Cooper threw it away.

He quickly remounted and as the pair circulated virtually together a fall by Watson handed him back the advantage. It was shortlived though and Watson re-took the lead just before Cooper lost any chance of the win when his KTM ran its fuel tank dry.

This left Watson clear out front and, as Cooper ran back to the pits for fuel, he cruised home to an easy win, almost five minutes clear of second placed Corie Southwood who had run an impressive, steady race.

Such was the pace of Watson and Cooper, Callan was able to refuel and get back out on track to still claim third place, albeit a lap down on the lead duo, just in front of Tom Neal and Mark Turner, while Cumbrian Ben Green rounded out the top six on 11 laps.

Lewis Hughes took seventh, just in front of the youngest member of the Edmondson racing clan, Jack, while Taylor Vernon and Jack Staines completed the top ten.

YOUTH 85cc

THERE was bitter disappointment for Josh Spinks in Sunday morning's 167-strong 85cc race as the race long leader's KTM ground to a steaming halt agonisingly close to the end of the hour, costing him a sure-fire win and dropping him to seventh place overall.

As a result the win went to the flying Scott Elderfield, who had his share of problems too. Deemed too young to ride his usual 125cc class machine in the main race, Scott dropped back down to an 85 for the day and overcame a bad start and a long pit-stop to replace a blown silencer to claim the win.

Scything back through the pack, Scott notched up 14 laps in the hour and took the win from Jake Millward by just over one and half minutes, with third placed Steve Holcombe bringing his KTM home just less than 20 seconds behind Millward, in what was the closest result of the whole weekend.

Luke Hawkins, Jamie McCanney and sixth placed Matt Burrows all finished on the same lap as winner Elderfield while Spinks headed up the final top ten finishers George Baldwin, Joe Jones and James Dunn, all on 13 laps.
