Armor Vision St Blazey Honda rider Dean Wilson will be looking nervously over his shoulder throughout the last round of the Arenacross ACU British Championship in Manchester’s AO Arena on February 22 as despite sitting on a 32-point series lead, the offering of double points for the final round mean that five other riders still have a mathematical shot at stealing the crown.
Wilson has been unstoppable throughout the series so far having racked up five wins from five Main Event starts but in an attempt to keep the suspense alive, series promoter Matt Bates has whipped out his old favourite to keep Adam Chatfield (S Briggs Honda), Conrad Mewse (Crendon Tru7.com Honda), Tommy Searle (Dirt Store Triumph), Jack Brunell (Stark Future) and Matt Bayliss (SC Sporthomes Honda) in the chase for the championship. Adding to the intensity of the racing will be the inclusion of the overseas AX World Tour riders who aren’t eligible for British Championship points but will still have the power to mix things up on the track.
Regardless of Wilson being able to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory, the battle for second in the series is as hot as it gets as Chatfield, Mewse, Searle and Brunell are separated by just four points – the difference between second and third, third and fourth, fourth and fifth etc etc on the night when you apply the double points formula. Further back, the battle for seventh-thru-10th is even tighter with Taylor Hammal, Mart Barr, Eddie Wade and Ashley Greedy covered by three points! Unfortunately, they’re more than 50 points behind Wilson and unable to pull off the upset of the century and steal series gold.
The Manchester round of the championship will be the 100th night of Arenacross and to celebrate ASL Active is going all out with the addition of a celebrity minibike race and the Amped Race to Manchester balance bike finale. Chuck in the international qualifier for the rearranged Abu Dhabi AX World Tour Finals in Yas Island’s Etihad Arena, the fire-mad Fuel Girls, FMX action and an excellent pyro, laser and light show and we’re in for an excellent night of action.
