The deep sands of Tain on the Moray Firth in the Scottish Highlands host the opening round of the Scottish Motocross Championship on March 8/9 which will be a rude awakening for anyone not fully prepped for the season ahead. The all-weather circuit is a popular training haunt for the British motocross elite but come race day it’s way rougher and tougher than normal and whichever riders top the podium have truly earned their slice of the Scottish Motocross Championship’s impressive prize fund.
Both current Pro champions are entered for this weekend’s event with Brad Todd leading the charge in MX1 while Charlie Heyman is the man to beat in MX2. Both riders will face some stiff competition at Tain and throughout the remainder of the series which swings by Clayshant, Elgin, Duns, Rhynie and Drumclog between now and September – full dates below!
The top riders to watch out for in MX1 include interlopers Brad Todd, Tristan Purdon, Conrad Mewse, Martin Barr, Jayden Ashwell, Charlie Putnam, Jason Meara and Lewis Hall who’ll take on Scotland’s very own Ben Edwards, Tony Craig, Ross Rutherford and the only GP winner in the field – former British Champion Billy MacKenzie who as a sprightly 40-year-old is also eligible for the Vets class!
In MX2, chasing current champion Charlie Heyman will be Glenn McCormick, Ryan Thomson, Kyle McNicol, Lennox Dickinson, Max Harris, Lucy Barker, Ryan Waggott, Lee Cameron, David Plank, Syd Putnam and Jordan McCaw.
The action kicks off on Saturday, March 8, with the Youth (Autos up to 250cc), 2-Stroke and Support classes, while it’s Adults, Vets and Pros all the way on Sunday, March 9. It’s not too late for riders to bag an entry in most classes - www.goracemx.com
The Tain circuit is in a beautiful location in the far north of Scotland. The nearest postcode is IV19 1PE with the track situated on a former RAF base around four miles east of Tain town centre not far from Loch Eye.
