THERE will be big celebrations up in Geordie-land this weekend as Gavin Linscott celebrates his 60th Birthday. There are few people who can match Gavin, proprietor of Bikesport Newcastle, for passion and commitment to the sport of motocross.
As Gavin turns 60-years-of- age, he has seen many come and go into the sport, but he still, at this milestone age, will be riding his new KTM 250 EXC (Six Day) at local motocross events, and enduros, including the famous Weston Super Mare Beach Race, alongside 18-year-olds and top UK riders!
Gavin and his shop are part of the furniture on the famous biker street, Westgate Hill, in Newcastle upon Tyne, which is aligned with Motorcycle shops.
Thirty years ago, Gavin started out selling British Bikes, then he named the business Custom Competition Motorcycles.
Later, in the seventies, he took an interest in the sport of scrambling, then riding on a Maico. His interest grew continuously and scrambling then led on to motocross.
When Japanese bikes became available, he gradually built up his empire to being one of the only motocross businesses to have dealerships with all the big manufacturers – Suzuki, Yamaha, Honda, Kawasaki, and KTM.
Bikesport, is like an Aladdin's cave, where you are spoilt for choice with motocross machines for all ages, and a huge choice of parts, accessories and clothing.
GP MX1 rider Brad Anderson and his family have bought bikes from Gavin since Brad was knee high, and much of his success is owed to Gavin's support and help over the years.
Other top British, and GP, riders that Gavin has helped over the past and present years include: James Hutchinson, Peter Kelly, James Noble, Bobby McMillan, Ashley Kane, Roger Harvey, Jared Smith, Mervyn Anstie, Rob Andrews, Brett Steel, Scott Gardiner, plus many more.
He is a familiar face to many, and always attends GPs home and abroad ‘strutting' or is that ‘staggering' around with a pint in his hand day and night – a larger than life character. Those who know him, and his antics, will verify he truly is one of a kind!
Gavin, sole owner of Bikesport, has no sons, but three very proud daughters, Zoey, Lisa and Cara, all aged over 20 now and his wife Lydia – no wonder with four women in the family, he needs time out riding his bike. However, he does have two grandsons to which he can now pass on his riding knowledge and experience.
So join us in wishing ‘Gav' a huge ‘congratulations!' on his 60th Birthday and 30 years in business, a ‘legend' in the sport of motocross, we think!
