ACL op puts Sterry out for the season

Motocross Injury Report Adam Sterry
British MX2 champion Adam Sterry is out for the rest of the year with an injury to his left ACL sustained in the opening moto of the MXGP of Europe at
Valkenswaard at the end of April.
The 20-year-old Monster Energy Kawasaki rider underwent surgery on Tuesday and the inevitable lengthy recovery period means he won't be ready to ride again until the end of the season.
It's the same as Tommy [Searle]," said Sterry. He was out for five months so by the time I get back it's likely going to be the end of the year so my season's pretty much over."
Following a tough start to his debut year on the factory team, Sterry was confident he was about to turn his season around after working on his technique out of the new metal mesh starting gate.
After gating in the top three at Valkenswaard he was in fifth when he was injured.
I didn't even crash, I just dabbed in a corner. It's very disappointing, especially because I haven't been able to show the results I wanted to after all the hard work through the off-season.
I felt like we'd made some good progress as you can see from where we were running at Valkenswaard when I got injured."
Fortunately, at the end of the season he will still have two years left on a three-year deal with the Monster Energy Kawasaki team.
There's nothing I can do about it so I've just got to stay positive and get strong so I'm ready to come back next year.
With an ACL injury you can carry on riding so say for instance we were battling for the world championship then I probably wouldn't get it repaired. The ACL stops the bottom part of your leg moving backwards and forwards so if you ride without one and put it down again you can destroy the whole of your knee.
I can walk on it now but I've got to get it fixed anyway so I might as well get it fixed now which won't affect next year. If I wait until the end of the season and then get it fixed I'll miss the start of next year. I'm not just thinking about motocross, I'm thinking for later in life as well - if you carry on without an ACL you wear your cartilage down. I'm looking at the bigger picture."
On top of the premature end to his season, one of the biggest blows for Sterry is missing out on possible selection for the Motocross of Nations on home soil.
I thought I had a realistic chance of being in the team and that would have been a dream come true to race the Nations in the UK so that's a massive disappointment."
