In a surprise but positive move, the Auto Cycle Union’s Motocross Commission has revised its 2026 ACU Standing Regulations to allow youth riders to compete in the 50cc Automatic class from their fifth birthday onwards

The update comes into effect from January 1, 2026 and aims to provide greater clarity and flexibility for aspiring young motocross riders and their families as they plan their entry into the sport and bid to follow in the wheeltracks of their motocross heroes.

No rider will be allowed to compete in the Automatic class before their fifth birthday, but they will still retain the option to ride in the 50cc Shaft Drive class which caters for boys and girls between the ages of four and seven years-old.

“The ACU is totally committed to ensuring the safe and progressive development of youth motocross, and this age group update for the 50cc Automatic class is another illustration of how we’re happy to review the discipline’s rules to meet the evolving needs of its participants – and support the riders that are the future of the sport we love,” said ACU Motocross Commission Chairman, Steve McCauley.
