A completely packed Butts Quarry, near Ashover, saw a cracking day of racing at the opening round of the Fast Eddy Racing Rock Oil XC Championship.

Pro rider Scott Austin topped an impressive field of entrants to take one of the hardest wins of his career in blizzard-like conditions and driving rain.

True grit and determination saw him through.

The turn-out for this first round was impressive by any standards, with riders showing up on the off-chance that someone had cancelled and they could get a place in either of the two adult races – even

the youth race was very well supported.

Conditions started off well – for mid-February – but deteriorated throughout the day, so much so that the final race was run in blizzard conditions at times with driving rain, sleet and snow.

Youth racers began the day in great conditions on slightly hard going which softened as the race went on.

The first adult race experienced the best conditions with over 100 riders filling the ranks with the course in perfect condition, twisting and turning through woodland, around the rocky quarry base and out across the motocross section, all of which provided a great combination for this series opener.
