BIKE TEST: Twenty 20 vision
By John Dickinson on 23rd Sep 15
LAST year, Scorpa launched a brand new model and named it the Twenty series for a very good reason, the model name was to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the the Scorpa brand
The short story of Scorpa is all about company founder Marc Teissier.
Marc and then-business-partner Joel Domergue, started Scorpa back in 1993 in a small unit on a motor-sports business park in Ales, in the south of France.
Initially they used the unwieldy but bullet-proof Rotax engine, before Scorpa really hit its stride in 1998 when the factory signed-up with Yamaha to use the equally trusty but physically smaller TY250 two-stroke motor.
The chassis sported a unique linkless rear suspension, with a long, centrally-positioned shock absorber and Scorpa gained cult status in the Clubman ranks as a solid, reliable, fuss-free mount that could also really perform in the right hands.
Along the way, though, Teissier had left Scorpa in order to begin again with Sherco, in 1999 in Barcelona. Sherco would be under his sole control and he has grown it into a major off-road brand, expanding into enduros, with a second factory in France.
Scorpa continued at Ales under a succession of management teams, until declared bankrupt in 2009.
