It's time to head indoors as the British SX series starts with a bang

THE 2004/05 British Maxxis SX championship promises to be the best series yet with a star-studded line-up of top riders. The seven-round, five-venue series organised by Future West and sanctioned by the ACU should be the best British supercross series for some years as more Pro class riders than ever will battle it out for a £35,000 prize fund. Round one of the championship kicks off at Sheffield's Hallam FM Arena this weekend (October 16) with defending champs Neil Prince (Open) and Lewis Gregory (125) heading the entry list. But neither #1 plate holder can expect to have it easy as ex AMA supercross riders Mike Brown, Josh Coppins and Kamikaze Kim Ashkenazi head the chasing pack of riders that also includes British stars Carl Nunn, Paul Cooper, Ryan Voase and Stuart Flockhart as well as those tenacious Canadian kiddies Colton Facciotti and Kyle Beaton. Straight after the dust's settled in Sheffield the supercross stars were due to set sail across the Irish sea for rounds two and three at a new venue for supercross in Punchestown, County Kildare. But this has now been cancelled due to poor ticket sales – in its place there will be a two-nighter on January 14/15 at The Point in Dublin. So after Sheffield the next rounds will be at Glasgow's SECC Arena on October 29/30 before the championship tour takes a brief break until Cardiff's round in early December. The stars then get their two nights at Dublin before the championship climaxes at Birmingham's NEC Arena on February 19. As well as the Pro class riders there'll be a full supporting cast of youth and amateur stars at each round as well as some small-wheeled supermoto action at the Sheffield, Glasgow and Cardiff races. It's hoped British champion Matt Winstanley will lead the supermoto line-up along with Chris Walker, Michael Laverty and Kieran Clarke.
