Bold as Braz'!
By Alex Hodgkinson on 26th May 11
David Philippaerts and Jeffrey Herlings turned around first moto defeats to take home the GP wins at Indaiatuba in Brazil.
Clement Desalle and Ken Roczen keep the red plates despite crashes, but Tommy Searle paid a heavy penalty for a single mistake during Saturday's qualification race.
The Brit stays third in the series, but lost further ground in terms of points on a weekend when his sheer speed should have taken him to the win. Glen Helen wrist injuries hurt the scoring potential of Zach Osborne and Jason Dougan, crashes cost Arnaud Tonus, and Shaun Simpson was another who promised more than he eventually delivered.
The combination of a rugged track and the Brazilian winter, with temperatures in the 80's, blue skies and a low sun which became troublesome at the end of the afternoon caught out just about everyone at some time during the weekend and gave the enthusiastic packed house thrills and action aplenty.
The day opened with a Roczen runaway in the MX2 opener, while Herlings completed a KTM 1-2 way ahead of Gautier Paulin. Zach Osborne had initially battled the Frenchman but had to slacken his pace as the race wore on .
"My hand injury from Glen Helen is still troubling me and I was struggling to hold on. I still felt strong and tried to come back at Tommy on the last lap but my hand came off the grip.”
Searle was paying for a single mistake on Saturday, in particular the action of the spectators who jumped the fence and touched his bike before he could remount: "I think everyone saw that I was capable of riding the pace of the KTM's this weekend, but I just couldn't ride my own race back where I started. I got pushed out at turn one and kept getting caught up in everyone else's race.” His efforts to fight through to fourth earnt the respect of the crowd, who cheered his every move
The second moto was even more dramatic. Roczen again holeshot, but could not shake off Herlings.
"I couldn't stay with Ken in the first moto, but I was stronger in the second race. I knew that it only needed one mistake!” declared the Dutch teenager. And that mistake came on lap 10.
"I made a big mistake downhill as both wheels slipped away, but I still felt sure I could catch him back up until I crashed the second time,” admitted a frustrated Roczen. "I hit neutral the second time and went over the bars. I banged my leg and the bars were bent, but at least I didn't lose any points in the championship today.”
Handing the victory to Herlings has not made life easier for the rest of the year however as the Dutch kid warned: "That was good for my confidence. Ken is still faster than me, but I'm getting closer. Now we go back to Europe and I'm going to work even harder, this series is not over yet!”
Searle managed to get through the pack quicker this time, but admitted that he again "found it hard to get my rhythm, taking the pace of the riders I was following. I was on Paulin for third with two laps to go but then I made a mistake and lost him again.”
Max Anstie struggled to match the leaders' pace - "I've felt sick all weekend and didn't get the starts I wanted” - but still maintained his top six ranking.
