Bou's home alone
By TMX Archives on 28th Jun 11
Toni Bou continued his domination of the 2011 SPEA FIM World Trials Championship with a win in the fourth round of the current series, his third of the season, in his home country, Spain.
The trial was a long way from Toni's city of Barcelona though, in fact a long way from Catalunya, which is the hub of European trials.
The town of Pobladura de las Regueras which hosted the event is actually some 270K from Madrid.
Alfredo Gomez made it two home wins as he took another convincing Junior victory while Britain's Jack Sheppard lost out to French rider Cedric Tempier in the Youths and had to settle for second place points.
The Championship class kicked-off with just 13 riders, which soon became 12 as Dougie Lampkin was forced to withdraw when he re-tweaked the ankle that he injured in the Scottish Six Days.
The trial was actually rather a good one with a mixture of sections including some dry, dusty climbs, several in a slippery stream and a couple of man-made hazards, the opener and the 15th, final section.
After the opening lap there was only ever going to be one winner as Repsol Montesa ace, Bou, was in a trial of his own. Toni had parted with just three single dabs while Sherco's Albert Cabestany was next on 11.
Bou's team-mate Takahisa Fujinami would have been holding second but he fived the final man-made section. Gas Gas number one Adam Raga was next on 14.
Raga roared back on the second circuit though to post the best lap score of five.
Bou started his lap with an uncharacteristic maximum on the man-made opener. That stung and he completed the remaining 14 hazards for just a single mark, dropped in the tenth section which was an imposing hillclimb.
In the end, Bou won comfortably to ease ten-points clear of Raga in the series standings, but with five scoring days remaining, Raga has time to make-up ground.
Cabestany was consistent as ever although a five on each lap, firstly on the hillclimb and then on the final hazard of the day, spoiled what could have been a challenging score. Fujinami finished fourth and Jeroni Fajardo fifth.
Just two sections, the fourth and tenth, took 20-marks off Jeroni and spoiled his and Ossa's day.
James Dabill on the factory Beta was top of the Brits in sixth but unfortunately a long way adrift from fifth.
The opening lap did the damage with Dibs dropping a mighty seven maximums plus an odd three.
